Invasion – Recap – Episode 1-20

Archive

My apologies but things are running a bit late this week. I actually had planned to have the recapping done by late Wednesday night/Thursday morning but satellite issues meant I had to watch the 2 AM Atlantic airing (1 AM Eastern for most of you). So without further delay, let’s get to the recapping.

This week’s episode kicks off with Larkin standing outside in some windy weather. While the hurricane isn’t forecast to make landfall at Homestead, she still encourages everyone to be careful.

And as set up at the end of last week’s episode, Tom is meeting with Szura. Tom wants to know where the other hybrids are but Szura isn’t being too helpful. Tom says that he doesn’t trust Szura anymore and Szura should know well enough not to trust him. To illustrate his point, Tom has a couple of his deputies arrest Szura.

At a meeting of the city council (wow, we haven’t seen anything out of those guys for a LONG time), Russ is trying to convince the mayor (and everyone else) that they would be wise to evacuate the town; the storm is likely to hit Homestead. Frank (the guy who told Russ he gets to go on administrative leave) is there as well and he says there’s no
evidence the storm will hit Homestead. He says that it would be devastating to their town’s tourism if they were to take precautions from the hurricane when it isn’t forecast to strike. Tom shows up to urge people to take precautions due to the unpredictable nature of hurricanes. Homestead’s city council apparently treats hurricanes much the same manner Amity Island’s treats sharks so there’ll be no special precautions.

Upon leaving the meeting Tom tells Russ about his run-in with Szura. He also urges Russ to get Larkin and the kids and leave Homestead. Tom, meanwhile, is going to track down the missing hybrids.

At the hospital, Kira is back at watching over Lewis. When Kira starts blaming Jesse for what happened, Lewis defends Jesse, noting that Jesse probably saved his life and that part of what happened was Lewis’ fault because he’s too trusting of people.

Dave is with Mariel at the hospital and he’s playing with a video camera. He knows something big is going to happen and he wants to get quality, documented footage of it so that they can prove what is going on, and show that he isn’t crazy.

While in Mariel’s office, they find Rose’s backpack but Rose is supposed to be at school. They look inside and find a Robin Hood book. Contained within the pages are a number of surveillance photos of Rose, Kira and Jesse and a note asking “Do you
know where your children are?”

Mariel is, understandably, quite freaked out and calls Jesse and Rose’s schools. Jesse is told to come to the hospital while Mariel is going to pick up Rose. Mariel’s needed for a surgery at the hospital however so Dave ends up going to get Rose in her place.

At the TV station, Larkin is talking to Russ on the phone. Russ wants to leave town but Larkin has one more story to cover first. Larkin is planning to warn everyone about the impending hurricane, even though she knows she may lose her job for doing so.

School is still in session for Rose. The ‘extinction’ teacher from last week is teaching about the importance of character when Dave shows up. He says that he is supposed to take Rose out of class and that he’s her uncle. The teacher asks why Mariel isn’t there (as she had said she would be). Dave has no note giving him permission to take Rose from school so he’ll have to wait until she can call Mariel and confirm it is okay for Rose to leave with him (after her lesson is over). In the meantime, Dave gets to take a seat with the other kids.

The lesson continues with the teacher saying the two ways to define character are how we live and how we die.

Arriving back at the Sheriff’s Department, Tom finds that Szura has escaped his cell, leaving nothing but some bloody wall graffiti claiming that “You Can’t Contain the Future”. Tom confronts his deputies about the escape but none of them are willing to tell him what happened or how Szura got past them. One of them, Deputy Montgomery, tells Tom that Szura wrote his message by scraping his elbow raw. The deputy thought it was ‘fascinating’. Tom leaves to go look for Szura but warns that someone(s) will be held responsible for Szura’s escape.

Back at the hospital, Kira gives Lewis his recently shined badge back. Lewis wonders why she wasn’t in school and Kira said that her father asked her to keep an eye on Lewis and make sure he was okay. Lewis then tells Kira she looks like an angel and they hold hands.

Hands are rapidly withdrawn when Jesse and Mariel walk in to the room.. Jesse apologizes for what happened but Kira is obviously still not happy to see Jesse. Mariel wants her to go check something and she is happy to get away from Jesse.

Dave’s lesson has finally come to an end as it is time for recess. Dave is busy sniping with the teacher when Rose runs outside to play. Dave follows her to make sure she is okay and then gets back to arguing with the teacher. He questions the appropriateness of her material for a second grade class. Miss Wade reveals she has stage four lymphoma and she isn’t expected to live much longer. She wants to make sure she passes on a positive message to the kids so she can accept her impending death.

Back at the hospital, Mariel tells Kira that they are going to leave town this afternoon to get to a safer place. Kira asks if Lewis is coming with them and Mariel tries to re-assure her that Lewis will be safe, it is their family that Szura will be coming after. Kira does not like this answer and runs out of the hospital. Mariel follows her but she is unable to figure out where she went.

A little later, but still at the hospital, Tom comes in to talk to Lewis. They still haven’t managed to track Kira down but they are going to keep looking.

Meanwhile, Russ and Jesse are driving to the ranger station. Jesse tells his father that he feels guilty about what happened with Kira. If it hadn’t been for Jesse, Lewis wouldn’t have gotten hurt and Kira wouldn’t have run off. Jesse goes on to speculate on whether Kira is in love with Lewis, citing the hand-holding he saw at the hospital. He admits to Russ that it does kind of bother him that she might be in love with Lewis (though it is left unstated if this may be due to the age difference, the hybrid thing or simple jealously). Russ tells Jesse that the next few days are going to be difficult and he wants Jesse to be strong for everyone.

Upon arriving Russ finds Mona boarding up windows at the ranger station. She is planning to head up the coast to stay with her sister, even though her sister lives where the hurricane is ‘forecast’ to strike. Mona again tells Russ he cannot stop something as big as what is happening in Homestead. She also tells Russ that the chief ordered Blackpoint Sound closed, in contradiction to Frank’s earlier statements that the rangers were not concerned about the hurricane.

At the hospital again, Mariel confirms it is okay for Dave to take Rose out of school, saying they have to go away for a few days. Tom tells Mariel that he is going to go home to look for Kira there; she’s not answering the phone but she may be just ignoring it.

As Tom is getting into his car, he notices another police car nearby. He takes a closer look and realizes Kira is in the backseat. He goes over and talks to Deputy Montgomery. The deputy says that Kira was really upset and so he let her get into the car. Kira does not want to get out of the car. Tom orders the deputy to unlock the door and the deputy does so, albeit reluctantly.

At this point, Tom notices that there’s a rather nice camera, one that would be quite useful for taking surveillance shots, sitting on the passenger seat. Tom questions Montgomery about it but before the deputy can come up with an excuse, Szura radios the deputy asking for his location. Tom answers for the deputy and warns Szura that he is coming to get him.

After Kira goes back into the hospital, Tom takes the deputy for a little drive. The deputy says that what happened to Lewis showed that Szura was right. The hybrids are still a minority and if they aren’t pro-active, more incidents like the one with Lewis are bound to occur. Tom tries to find out where Szura’s followers are but the deputy instead chooses to make threats about killing Tom and his family. For his rebuttal, Tom plows the passenger side of the police car into a the side of a truck trailer.

It is almost time for Larkin’s story as she talks to Russ on the phone. Russ says that he is on his way to Blackpoint Sound to find out what they’ve got to hide up there. He also tells Larkin he is proud of her for what she is doing.

Rose and Dave are leaving the school. Dave warns Miss Wade about the hurricane. She does not seem at all surprised when she is told the hurricane will hit Homestead as “life is unpredictable.” Dave then busts out his video camera. He uses it to get her to promise she’ll be careful during the storm and set up a date with her for a post-hurricane time.

Lewis is quite happy to see that Kira is safe when she returns to his room in the hospital. Lewis says that he has to stay but he wants Kira to go with her father and get out of town. He says he’ll be waiting for her and the two share their first kiss. They don’t even seem to notice when Mariel enters the room until she tells Kira that they have to go now.

Meanwhile it is broadcast time for Larkin. She quickly diverges from her scheduled report and says they are now being told that the hurricane is likely to hit Homestead and she urges everyone to evacuate immediately. She is cut-off at this point and the newscaster assures everyone that there must have been a mis-communication as they have received no such reports. Thus, the effectiveness of Larkin’s warning is somewhat questionable.

Everyone’s favorite ranger, Frank is talking to someone on his radio. He says that he needs his money so he can leave. He’s not like them so he cannot ride out the storm by simply hiding underwater.

Russ catches Frank and asks him why Blackpoint Sound has been closed off. Apparently the chief didn’t order the closure, Frank did. Russ hits Frank, demanding to know who he was talking to on the radio. When Frank doesn’t prove forthcoming, he starts dunking Frank’s head underwater, even more so once Frank confirms he’s not a hybrid. Frank tells Russ to look in the water and he’s shocked to see it is full of people (presumably Szura’s hybrids).

Russ goes to Tom with what he found. He wants Tom to take his deputies up to the Sound to deal with the hybrids. Tom isn’t sure which of his deputies he can trust now that Szura’s infiltrated his department. Russ counters by suggesting he take non-hybrids but Tom points out that Frank’s not a hybrid. People are scared right now, and scared people are willing to follow anyone.

And now it is time for the exodus out of town as everyone begins loading into two vehicles. Jesse takes a moment to tell his mom that he is glad they’re all going together. This is obviously his way of apologizing for some of the things he’s said to her recently and she takes it as such and the two share a hug.

Dave has decided that he’s going to stay behind in Homestead. He shouldn’t be a target and he wants to capture everything that happens on video. Larkin is opposed to this plan as she doesn’t think it will be safe for anyone to be in Homestead once the hurricane hits but Russ backs Dave’s decision and even provides him a rifle with which to defend himself.

Tom speculates that if people listened to Larkin’s warning the main roads may be awfully busy. Russ suggests they take a back road through the Glades instead. Everyone seems okay with this plan so they drive away.

After driving for a while, it is much darker and rainier outside. The two vehicles come to a stop and Tom and Russ get out. They tell Larkin and Mariel that now that they’ve gotten them past the roadblocks, they have to go back to the town. Larkin and Mariel are very pissed off about Tom and Russ’ springing this on them but they do admit they wouldn’t have left town if they had known in advance. Russ tells them they are doing this because they (Tom and Russ) love them and they want to make sure that everyone will be safe.

After a reluctant agreement (presumably an agreement brought on by concern for the welfare of the kids) Mariel and Larkin leave in one vehicle while Tom and Russ drive back to town.

Another excellent episode which seems to set the stage for a hurricane-filled final two episodes to close out the season.

I assume that Lewis and Dave’s decision to stay behind was due to an agreement with Russ and Tom to help stop whatever Szura’s got planned. Though I guess we shall have to wait until next week to find out for certain.

The introduction of Miss Wade’s lymphoma raises some interesting questions. We know that certain physical problems prevent the creation of a hybrid version of an individual (Kira, with her congenital heart defect) but other conditions (like the arm Lewis lost) can be repaired in the hybrid process. It seems to me that curing lymphoma would be somewhat more difficult than growing an arm, but if the hybrid process just goes by DNA, then it wouldn’t be a problem for a hybrid to make a new, healthy version of the teacher. I suspect it’s something we will see explored at some point in the future (if not in the next two episodes, then in the second season (assuming we get one)).
