Silversun Pickups – Pikul Review

The Inside Pulse:
Ok, so the full length is due next month and this EP (pronounced Pie-kull) is almost a year old, but if you like anticipating releases rather than having them ramble across your consciousness, it’s worthwhile to give this one a listen. The sound is post-Hole/Distillers replacing the crazy with a communal spirit that invites the listner in rather than allowing you to witness the car wreck.

That’s not to say there isn’t the urgency of those other bands. The vocals are breathy and forceful, the songs tend to ebb and flow nicely thanks to a solid rhythm section, and the guitars are spacy and hooky enough to keep things interesting. Think of the Pixes without the irony.

Positives:
– “Booksmart Devil,” “…All the Go Inbetweens” and the hidden track are treats. If the new album builds of the feel off these, it’ll be a winner.
– While the band gives itself tons of room and stops just nigh of becoming a post-punk jam band, the tracks never get overlong or noodly.

Negatives:
– The EP ends with 16 blank tracks of various lengths and a hidden track at the end. I’m sorry, but that’s a bit of pretention I hope the band got out of its system.
– Fans of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hole, the Pixies (if that isn’t a 90% redundant set) will be happy. Others will mostly pass.

Cross-breed:
Hole with The Pixies and Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Reason to buy:
You want to say you were onto this band before the new album breaks and makes a noise.
