Murtzcellanious: LIVE Canadian Idol Recap – July 18

Archive

Okay, so I promised I would share my thoughts on the change to the John Bassett theatre from the Trinity Studios location now that we have reached the Top 10 phase of the competition.

While I liked both locations, there is something about the Bassett theatre that just says Canadian Idol. While it could just be the white sign outside the door, I think it is the atmosphere that surrounds each show. Part of this is attributed to the rush line that is outside. Then there is the bigger stage. The bigger audience. And of course, the band. It’s just a different vibe.

After the first group performance which included some Alanis Morrissette fro Kati and Steffi, Ben came out and announced that 2.2 million votes were cast on Monday night.

After that, there was a recap of all of the performances.

It was at this point that Ben introduced a special performance by Nelly Furtado. While I expected her to come and perform live, it was just a taped performance that she did for the Idols when she was helping to prepare them for Monday’s performances. It was still really good though. She performed an acoustic version of “Promiscuous.”

Commercial Break.
During the break, couches were brought out as well as three stools.

On the front couch sat Sarah, Kati, Ashley, Craig and Brandon.

On the back couch sat Tyler, Brandon, Steffi, Chad and Eva.

Steffi and Brandon are beside each other once again. Interesting.

Onto the results.

TYLER: SAFE
BRANDON: SAFE
STEFFI: BOTTOM 3
CHAD: SAFE
EVA: SAFE
ROB: SAFE
CRAIG: SAFE
ASHLEY: BOTTOM 3
KATI: BOTTOM 3
SARAH: SAFE

Three Ontarians in the bottom three was certainly somewhat surprising. I also believed that Ashley Coulter and Steffi D delivered two of the best performances on Monday, so I was surprised. While many have asked me if this is the best season of the show (I still prefer the second season the best), I prefer to say that it is certainly the most shocking. With that being said, I didn’t think tonight’s final result would be surprising at all, as I was sure that Kati would be the one going home.

Ben asked for the judges to comment.

Farley: Surprises every week.

Zack:: It’s a pop-pop-pop ular vote.

Jake: Savour the moment.

Sass: You’re all going to be great.

Commercial.

After the break, Steffi was told that she was safe. So it was down to Ashley and Kati.

After a slight pause, Ben delivered the verdict…

Kati was going home.

Not a big surprise and Kati said that she was going to go home and “keep on truckin.'”

She sang us out.

The theme for next week is The Rolling Stones. An interesting choice.

See you then.
