Rock Star: Supernova – Recap – Episode 2-22

Archive

It’s time for the finale, and Brooke Burke reminds us that tonight, Gilby Clarke, Jason Newsted and Tommy Lee will choose the lead singer for Supernova. And let’s not forget about Dave Navarro

Let Us Take You Back To Last Night when the Final Four sang.

Dave thinks it’s been a helluva summer and tells the “band” that they can’t lose with their choice of lead singer. Unless it’s Lukas, since he sucks.

Tonight, we don’t have a bottom three – instead it’s a bottom two. And in the bottom two at some point last night were Magni, Toby and Lukas. Dilana is safe!

So let’s go right to the first member of the bottom two – it’s (bye) Magni, who does Jimi Hendrix’ “Fire” one more time.

The second member of the bottom two? Why, it’s Toby Rand, which all but seals Magni’s fate. He’s singing “White Wedding” by Billy Idol, but it really doesn’t matter, since we know Magni’s gone.

So Gilby butters both of them up before starting. He tells Magni that it’s been a great ride, but he doesn’t know if Magni is fronting the band – it’s more like he wants to be PART of the band – so he’s the next to go.

True to himself to the end, Magni thanks his fans, his family, House Band (who he jokes (maybe) that he just wants to be in), Supernova and the Final Three.

The Final Three are now onstage, and we go through the pretense that the “band” is choosing the winner right now.

We see a brief package on Lukas. Afterwards he adds that Supernova are amazing guys and he’d be honoured to lead them.

Now it’s a package on Dilana. She says that the “band” need someone that’s 1000% dedicated to great guys and great music. Is this the music version of the “giving 110%” sports cliché? Anyways, she says that Lukas is amazing, and Toby is incredible but that SHE is the One. And once again, ABC execs cry.

Finally, we get Toby’s clips. He thanks the “band” for the encouraging advice and thinks that he’s ready, he’ll bring lots of energy and also, he’s tall.

Tommy now speaks up and thinks that he needs to hear them all sing in order to make a decision. And given that we’re only 20 minutes into the show, it’s a good idea. Besides which, if you were basing your decision on those speeches, you’d HAVE to choose Dilana, and we can’t have that, can we?

I notice during the ad break that they’re using “Head Spin” for the Survivor plug. Foreshadowing?

OK, time for performances. First up is Lukas Rossi, who sleepwalks through a rendition of The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony”. I’m dead serious. Lukas knows that he’ll be one of the last two, and isn’t even bothering to try here.

Now it’s Dilana’s turn, as she blows Lukas away with a reprise of “Zombie” by the Cranberries. You can tell that she wants it, but it ain’t gonna happen.

Finally, Toby Rand performs for the second time tonight. He blows Dilana away doing The Killers’ “Somebody Told Me”, showing great vocals and crowd interaction. I really don’t know how he can lose at this point.

It’s Jason’s turn to talk. He tells Toby that his vocal ability was never in question, but still, he’s the next to go.

WHAT?

Looks like this “band” won’t last very long, as they’ve chosen a Marty over a J.D. I have no idea what the f*ck they were thinking.

Anyways, Toby thanks the “band” for the best time ever, and overall is very gracious in losing.

Brooke now tells Dilana and Lukas that they had the highest number of votes last night. Thanks Brooke/teleprompter, that wasn’t obvious since they weren’t in the bottom two earlier. She asks the “band” for their final decision, but since it’s about 8:40, Gilby tells Brooke that they need a couple more minutes to decide.

Now it’s time. Tommy tells Lukas that his look, energy and vocals have been really amazing. He tells Dilana that his voice is enchanting, and now appeals to the audience for help. And since the audience’s cheers sound like incoherent mumbling, and since he apparently had the highest number of votes last night, the “band” chooses Lukas as the winner. I still don’t know what they were thinking.

Dave now extends Dilana the offer of playing with House Band on the tour. Yeah, like she and Storm weren’t gonna be a part of the tour. Gilby then offers to help write and produce a record for Dilana once the tour is over (read: once the “band” is done for good). Dave then offers to play in the recording sessions. And with offers like that, Dilana has no choice but to promise to put a CD out.

Now Brooke and Dave ask to be entertained, and sadly Robbie Williams is not around to do that, so they’ll have to settle for the “new” Supernova – Gilby! Jason! Tommy! And Lukas! They mumble their way through “Be Yourself”, and Magni comes back onstage for “It’s All Love”.

And that’s it. What a joke.
