Campus Chatter: Riot Edition

-I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t eagerly anticipating Cryme Tyme’s debut last night and I would have to give them about a B for their debut effort. They didn’t match up chemistry-wise with the Spirit Squad and in all honesty, no team on the WWE roster really matches up well with them. I’m a huge fan of tag team wrestling so it no doubt pains me to see how terrible tag team wrestling has become.

-It’s been 9 days now since I have been stuck with regular cable as opposed to digital. I remember being excited when I was younger and we got up to 70 channels. Now? I’m on the verge of rioting. I can’t wait til tomorrow when the problem is finally corrected.

-I’ll keep quiet on the Mets/Cardinals front if only because I could go on and on about the two horrible managers, Willie Randolph and Tony La Russa. Sadly due to a mid-term I am unable to fly back to New York for Game 6 and if necessary, Game 7. I will say one thing though, the Mets have arguably the worst advanced scouting I have ever seen from a playoff team.

-Sticking with baseball, what exactly were the Cubs thinking when they hired Lou Pinella? He may be a good manager but it seems like a total panic move to me. Why would you hire a total “win now” guy when you are not close to contending? Remember, this is a team with no middle infield, no outfielders and no pitching outside of Carlos Zambrano. I understand they wanted to show that they were serious about winning, but the last time they did they they hired Dusty Baker and I think we all know how that turned out.

-I really don’t care what anyone says, I’d rather watch the Chicago Bears defense play than watch any offensive unit in the NFL play. What can I say, I love defense.

-Everything that had to be said about the Miami/Florida International fight has been said already so I will just say this; when student-athletes cannot even adhere to the rules of society, what makes you think that they will be able to adhere to the rules on the football field? Miami’s recent struggles on the field may have nothing or everything to do with Larry Coker, but one thing that we did learn was that their lack of discipline certainly starts with him.

-Sure initial BCS rankings matter, but lets wait a few weeks and see how things shake out before we all get in a panic. I’m all for a playoff system and I have even found a way to incorporate the Bowl System with a potential playoff. If you’re lucky I might unveil my plan at or around bowl season.

-Maybe it is just because I attend the University of Florida but how is more not being made of the officiating blunder which potentially cost Florida a shot at the national title? The refs not only missed that it should have been intentional grounding on Chris Leak, but they were somehow still convinced after watching the replay that he didn’t even throw a pass! I’m speechless…

-Can anything go right for Oklahoma? First they lose Rhett Bomar just before the season starts, and now it looks as though Heisman hopefuly Adrian Peterson is done for the year with a broken collarbone. Worse yet, all indications point to him entering the NFL draft after the season.

-One of the cooler things in sports I have ever witnessed took place this past Saturday as the Indiana football team jumped into the student section to celebrate with their fellow students following their upset of #15 Iowa. Coach Hoeppner is building something special at Indiana, just as he did at Miami of Ohio before taking the job with the Hoosiers.

-Rutgers throttled Navy this past week to improve to 6-0. I hate to say I told you so but, I told you so.

-How many times can USC narrowly escape versus a mediocre Pac-10 opponent? One of these days they aren’t going to be able to…

-Someone please tell the Big East that conference play has begun around the country. Any time you guys want to play eachother you are more than welcomed to.

-I’m a bit too lazy to do the research but have Ohio State and Michigan ever faced off as #1 and #2 in the rankings? There is no doubt that ABC is salivating at the possibility.

-I started with Miami and I might as well end with Miami. How on earth can the school be satisfied with the suspensions handed out when the only game they will miss is against Duke. Duke! Most of the starters would have been pulled early anyway. Only at the U I guess.

That’s all for now, hopefully my next column will be in celebration of a Mets National League Championship. See you guys on Friday.
