A Case of the…. Lost

Shows

It looks like we have the Locke of old back, as he’s now putting faith back into the island and its mysterious powers, and once again being a hunter. I’ve round countless interviews with Terry O’Quinn, and the one constant since season two has been that he hasn’t liked the development of Locke’s character. Whether this was an intended character progression (or regression, depending on your perspective) or not remains to be seen, but nevertheless I think this is an improvement, as his character did seem to falter somewhat throughout the previous season.

Locke’s restored faith will likely play a significant part this season, as will the return of his more aggressive, warrior-like behavior.

Considering his flashbacks, I’m surprised Locke didn’t make a bigger deal out of the fact that Henry turned out to be the leader of The Others. I mean, his father betrayed him, numerous times, as did his mother. He probably felt abandoned by Helen as a result. Then Eddie betrayed him, and in turn he felt abandoned by his new family. He put his trust into Henry, and to find out that he, too, was lying to and manipulating him….I’m just surprised Locke’s reaction wasn’t more emotional.

The revelation that Locke was involved in a drug ring, of sorts, adds a whole lot of layers to his character, in my opinion. Especially when you consider his treatment of Charlie’s addiction. At first (in the first season), Locke was very non-judgmental. He simply told Charlie “after you ask me three times, I’m going to give you the drugs.” He didn’t take control of the situation and he didn’t pass judgment. In season two, however, he did the exact opposite. I find it interesting that he would actually get violent with Charlie due to his supposed drug use, when in his former life he was, essentially, a drug pusher/dealer.

Locke’s dream sequence was interesting and definitely worth another viewing. I found it interesting that he dreamt of Jack closely interacting with Henry, but not so much Kate and Sawyer, and then had Sawyer and Kate looking at each other all lovey dovey. I find it intriguing because, essentially, that’s an accurate depiction of what’s happening. Jack is held captive, alone, and gets frequent visits from Henry/Ben. On the other hand, Kate and Sawyer are being held in close proximity to each other, and recently shared a passionate kiss. Interesting, since he has no way of knowing this.

How Locke became paralyzed is one of the best kept secrets of the show. I am definitely interesting in finding that out.

Is it me, or was Charlie rocking a mullet this week? I mean, hell, I know you don’t have a professional hairstylist there, but still…

So it appears that Desmond is now psychic. It’s an interesting possibility, but at the same time, unless they have something very specific in mind, I think they’re entering dangerous territory. The writers have to be careful that they don’t get too “cartoony” with their mythology. An island that possibly cures people of their ailments = interesting. An exploding hatch that blows off clothing and makes people psychic = potentialy stupid.

Oh, and if I were Desmond, I would get getting out of that tie-dye shirt/dress as quickly as possible, and NOT chilling and casually skimming rocks in it for lord knows how long.
