Seven Deadly Days of The Real World: Denver – Greed Friday

Features, Shows

Greed and envy are closey related. Some think greed is really envy and vice versa. However, greed is a sin of excess and it usually applies to material wealth. People who are greedy want to get more than their “fair share” of things. They steal from others to get the things they want. Greed often results in “disloyalty”, “betrayal”, and “treachery”.

On The Real World, greed as far as money and material wealth is concerned is hard to find. All of the roommates live in this insane house. They all have the same job and they all get paid the same amount of money. There is no difference in wealth inside the house. Still there is a lot of betrayal and back-stabbing that goes on inside the house. Most of it has nothing to do with money, but it’s still being greedy.

The Denver cast has not been that greedy so far. But there has been some betrayal. You could perhaps list this under envy, since it’s dealing with love. Jenn betrayed Colie early on when she “hooked up” with Alex knowing that Colie liked him. That’s being greedy in a way by wanting Alex to herself or at least acting like she did. Greed can ruin friendships.

I suppose you can say that Alex has been somewhat greedy. He seems to want every girl he can get. That’s the problem with being a “playa”. They tend to be greedy and want an excess of women. Usually more than they can handle. Perhaps Davis could fall into this category as well. He seems to want both guys and girls to want him and that’s being a little greedy.

So really that’s the difference between greed and envy. Greed is more hurtful as you take everything for yourself, while envy is just there in the background. When you just think about what other people have and want what they have, then you have committed envy. But when you commit greed, you actually take action to your thoughts and take what you want.

Like sloth, this sin is hard to find in its traditional definition on this show. But it still exists inside of The Real World house. Greed often turns into envy, so it’s easy to see why they are often confused. On The Real World, there are basically the same with minor differences as I have explained above. With everyone being equal inside the house in terms of wealth, the roommates have to find other ways to become greedy. But really in “real” life, people living the lifestyles that the roommates on The Real World live and the houses they live in could be considered greedy. That’s why people want money. To live in expensive houses and get nice things and to live a lavish lifestyle. That’s why people resort to greed, when they can’t get those things in traditional ways. So I suppose the entire show is about greed in a way.

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
