TV Babies: Gilmore Girls, Episode 7-20

Shows

Lorelai? Lorelai? What could the title mean? Well, like me – you’ll have to wait. But from the early feedback I’m getting, it was worth it: last night’s episode will rate as one of the season’s best…

It had everything, really – both emotionally and physically. It would be easier naming characters who weren’t featured than those who were: Caesar, Kirk & Lulu, Paris & Doyle, Lane & Zack, Brian, Babette, Morey & Miss Patty, Gypsy, April. It had Rory’s angst concerning her future, Lorelai’s slow-but-steady road back to Luke (complete with an old hat as a sign: very Drugstore Cowboy), Friday Night Dinner with the Gilmore’s Senior (if brief), and an unexpected change in Luke’s summer plans…

So we all know about Luke’s boat trip with April, which he’s been planning for what seems like forever. He can hardly contain his excitement, as Lorelai can attest as they discuss at the diner (great to see her back as a regular). Lorelai has some minor but helpful suggestions, such as a few nights here-and-there at a hotel so April can enjoy a shower and a bed on land. Now the old Luke might have ignored these ideas; the new Luke appreciates the input.

Unfortunately, the input is a moot point when April calls Luke with good news and bad. The good news: she’s been accepted to a science camp.
The bad: Luke & April’s boat trip looks to be postponed ’til next summer. Luke is understandably disappointed, yet handled it admirably (no thanks to Zack, who meant well). I do know someone, however, who would love to hit Barnacle Billy’s this summer.

As for other Stars Hollowans summer plans, an amazing opportunity falls in Zack’s lap: a two-month tour as the fill-in lead guitarist for Vapour Rub. They even have a family-friendly tour bus. Just not family-friendly enough for Lane, who rationally (and selflessly) decides that the road is no place for six-month old twins. But she wants Zack to go. As usual, Lane rocks…

We’re almost ready to solve the mystery of the episode’s title. But first: karaoke, of course. Lorelai realizes the only way to lift Rory out of her rut is eating, shopping, and Stars Hollow weirdness. And it seems like half of Stars Hollow has congregated for Karaoke Night. Things go just about as you would expect early on: a few Miss Patty/Babette duets, Kirk’s warped take on Culture Club. Then Rory + liquid courage helps Lorelai onto the stage. Just as she’s settling into the Dolly Parton original “I Will Always Love You” – in walks Luke. Needless to say, the song takes on a completely different meaning. While the scene did walk a very fine line between Gilmore Girls sap and run-of-the-mill/ romantic comedy sap, I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt. Because we all know we’re coming to the end of the road with this show we’ve loved for seven years.

As if that wasn’t enough for 48 minutes, Logan shows up at Lorelai’s front door as she tries to shake her karaoke hangover. And the purpose of his visit? He’s planning on moving to California, and wants Rory to join him -with Lorelai’s blessing…as his wife. Lorelai? Lorelai?
