Low Blows: Holyfield, Corrales, and Hopkins

– After stepping into Oscar De La Hoya’s corner for the biggest fight of the year, trainer Freddie Roach is being sought out for another high profile fight, according to the Associated Press. Bernard Hopkins is seeking the spectacled one for his July 21st fight against Winky Wright. This would end up being a bad deal for Roach, because then he would actually have to watch this 12-round snoozer.

– From Fightnews.com, Fernando Vargas plans to fight his last fight against Ricardo Mayorga. The date is tentatively set for September 8th. The bout will be promoted by Vargas’ new promotional company and he hopes to have it in the Los Angeles area. Vargas has been battling weight limits for the past few years and plans to have this fight at a 162 pound catch-weight.

– Also from the Associated Press, Evander Holyfield continues his comeback on June 30th against Lou Savarese. Holyfield has won three in a row since returning to the ring last year. Savarese has a record of 46-6 and at 41 years of age is three years the junior of Holyfield.

– Joan Guzman injured his left hand during the training for his lightweight title defense against Mike Katsidis. The bout was part of a May 26th HBO doubleheader but that has now been canceled. No boxing will be televised on HBO that night and the card is being rescheduled for a later date.

– Showtime is planning on airing a tribute to Diego Corrales as part of their June 9th doubleheader. Kevin Iole pens a nice farewell to Corrales at Yahoo! Sports.

– “Cool” Vince Philips dropped his third in a row, this one a unanimous decision loss to Alisultan Nadirbegov.

– Adrian Diaconu created a name for himself in the light heavyweight division when he knocked Rico Hoye out in the third round of their main event contest on ESPN Wednesday Night Fights.

– Jose Cotto fought Prawet Singwangcha to a draw for the vacant WBA Lightweight Title. Jose Cotto is the older brother of Miguel Cotto.

– Terry Smith and Kelvin Davis put on a great heavyweight fight in the main event of ESPN Friday Night Fights. Both men were in trouble during the fight but Smith emerged with the unanimous decision.

– Peter Manfredo Jr wasted no time in rebounding from his early stoppage loss to Joe Calzaghe. Manfredo Jr scored a ninth round TKO of Ted Muller only one month removed from the Calzaghe fight.

– Isaac Hlatshwayo defeated Joseph Makaringe by unanimous decision in their welterweight bout.

– Silence Mabuza is back on the right track after recording a 5th round TKO of Mbwana Matumla. Mabuza had lost two of his last three fights, both to Rafael Marquez.

– Joey Gilbert may have the brightest future of all the fighters from the first season of The Contender. Gilbert improved to 15-1 with a 10th round TKO of Juan Astorga.
