My Statistic vs. Players

I received emails asking about some specific players and how they scored using my statistic. I know it is not perfect and I am looking for any input to help perfect it (I have one or two ideas already).

With the league average as a 1.00. Here are how some players of the past ranked using their best year. I also included a few shortstops of 2007.

Jim Rice – 1978 – 1.70
Tony Gwynn – 1997 – 1.45
Rickey Henderson – 1990 – 1.59
Vince Coleman – 1987 – 1.07
Willie McGee – 1985 – 1.48
Cal Ripken – 1991 – 1.49
George Brett – 1985 – 1.55
Tim Raines – 1987 – 1.41
Jimmy Rollins – 2007 – 1.39
Troy Tulowitzki – 2007 – 1.26
Hanley Ramirez – 2007 – 1.40

The question posed to me was “Are the non-power hitters penalized because of the percentage breakdown” that I used. Also asked about using the on-base plus slugging percentages as one variable, instead of two. I will review and figure this out.

I have asked one minor league baseball team (the one I work for) to use this statistic, and it looks like they will. I have three months to perfect this and email me with suggested changes.

Hitter’s Rating = .25 (BA/lg BA) + .175 (ISO/lg ISO) + .2 (RP/lg RP) + .375 (OPS/lg OPS)

That is the existing statistic.
