Cause of Death Determined for Houston Fighter

News

The Houston Chronicle’s MMA blogger is reporting that Sam Vazquez, a 35-year old MMA fighter that died on November 30 after being knocked out in an October 20 Renegades Extreme Fighting bout, is “the first mixed martial artist to die as a result of injuries sustained in a sanctioned fight and pay the ultimate price for his love of the sport.” That’s because the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially determined his cause of death as a severe brain injury, or more specifically, “complications from blunt trauma to the head with subdural hemorrhage.” This is apparently very rare for fighters, and hopefully this type of death is something we don’t hear about again for a long time, if not ever. Our condolences go out to his loved ones, of course.
