ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series 8.15.08

Results

It seems like it has been a while since one of these ShoXC events. It has been four months and ten days, to be exact, and the main event tonight is the same as it was at the last event. Over four months ago, Po’ai Suganuma scored a TKO over Jared Hamman via flying knee in just 15 seconds. That’s the fight but just in case you don’t believe me, you can read my review here. Hamman maintained that the referee stepped in too soon so here we go again.

Jared Hamman vs. Po’ai Suganuma (Light Heavyweight)
Referee: Jason Herzog

Hamman comes out aggressive. Suganuma catches a kick attempt and lands an overhand right counter that produces a takedown for Suganuma. Hamman gets back up to his feet and they quickly clinch against the fence. Hamman judo tosses Suganuma down but they scramble into an arm triangle attempt from Hamman in bottom position. This action is way too fast to keep up with. Suganuma stands and kicks a downed Hamman but Hamman quickly jolts back to his feet. Hamman comes after Suganuma and lands a left right combo that causes Suganuma to go for a takedown. Hamman kinda stuffs it, Suganuma’s attempt was half-hearted as he was more trying to get away from the punches as opposed to scoring a takedown, and ends up hammerfisting Suganuma to a referee stoppage at 2:34 of the first round.

Jared Hamman looked good and both fighters put on one hell of a fight for only two and half minutes. A third match between the two was hinted and Hamman was all for it. Perhaps give these guys their rubber match on EliteXC. I’d say they both earned it.

Televised Undercard

– Ray Lizama beat Keith Berry by TKO at 2:15 of R2 in a 190 lb catchweight fight. This was a spectacular battle of wills in what was mostly a standup war. Berry had Lizama in a rear naked choke during the first round and it looked deep but Lizama wouldn’t give up. Berry let him out of the hold to go for full mount. These two slugged it out in a dramatic brawl.

– Rosi Sexton defeated Debi Purcell by split decision in the EliteXC’s debut of thier 130 pound woman’s division. Not only did ShoXC give us a decision, but a close one at that. Shocking.

– Cyrille Diabate earned a unanimous decision over Jaime Fletcher in the light heavyweight division. The Frenchman was sharp with his strikes and Fletcher’s face showed Diabate’s handywork. The mat was smeared with Fletcher’s blood as well.

– Fabricio Camoes made quick work of Sammy Morgan in their lightweight bout. Camoes scored a takedown and moved into full mount as Morgan held onto a guillotine attempt. Morgan gave his back and Camoes flattened him out for the rear naked choke at 0:47 of R1.
