What's Playing 10/24/08

Top Story

Not nearly as many films opening in wide release this week, but there’s plenty to creep you out. The biggest of all, to me at least, is that Jigsaw is back in the fifth installment of Saw and he’s there to let people make themselves the victims. Colin Farrell and Edward Norton play a couple of inner-city cops that are trying to deal with a scandal involving their own family. And perhaps the scariest of all: singing show tunes in high school. All that and more as Halloween draws near so freak out in theatres this weekend everyone.

Wide Release

Saw V – Starring Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Scott Patterson, Julie Benz, and many more. With all the other cops he was playing the game with dead and rotting, it’s up to Agent Hoffman to continue Jigsaw’s murderous traditions.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year – Starring Zac Efron, Ashley Tisdale, Vanessa Hudgens, and more. As seniors in high school, Troy and Gabriella struggle with the idea of being separated from one another as college approaches. Along with the rest of the Wildcats, they stage a spring musical to address their experiences, hopes and fears about their future.

Pride & Glory – Starring Edward Norton, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Ehle, and Jon Voight. A saga centered on a multi-generational family of New York City Police officers. The family’s moral codes are tested when Ray Tierney, investigates a case that reveals an incendiary police corruption scandal involving his own brother-in-law. For Ray, the truth is revelatory, a Pandora’s Box that threatens to upend not only the Tierney legacy but the entire NYPD.

Limited Release

Changeling – Starring Angelina Jolie, Gattlin Griffith, John Malkovich, and Jeffrey Donovan. A mother’s prayer for her kidnapped son to return home is answered, though it doesn’t take long for her to suspect the boy who comes back is not hers.

Fear(s) Of The Dark – Different black-and-white animation techniques tell several scary stories. There’s a story of a teenage boy who meets the wrong girl. Another tale deals with a small community where people disappear and are never seen again. Then there’s the narrative of a little Japanese girl who suffers from horrible nightmares followed by a tale where a man doesn’t get the rest he hoped for in an old not-so-abandoned house. These stories are connected by the story about a man with a devilish smile and four enormous dogs from hell and by a woman’s monologue about her fears.

I’ve Loved You So Long – Juliette was 15 years in prison. Confronted with the unexpected goodness of her younger sister Léa, who makes Juliette a part of her family, very slowly breaks up the Juliette’s ice and bitterness and she carefully opens up.

Passengers – Starring Anne Hathaway, Patrick Wilson, Andre Braugher, David Morse and more. A grief counselor working with a group of plane-crash survivors finds herself at the root of a mystery when her clients begin to disappear.
