Seems as though Disney is getting into the double-dipping business. The recent release of Sleeping Beauty: Platinum edition on DVD and Blu-Ray came only 5 years after the highly touted 2003 DVD release of Sleeping Beauty: Special Edition. Of course there are new bonus features and remastering with the new release, and the new 2-disc Blu-Ray version of Sleeping Beauty also offers a standard DVD disc, a first in the industry.
The second film to get a re-release will be Mary Poppins. On January 27, 2009, Disney will release Mary Poppins: 45th Anniversary Edition, only 5 years after the 2004 release of Mary Poppins: 40th Anniversary Edition.
The 45th Anniversary edition will include all of the features of the 40th Anniversary edition, but will also include 4 featurettes about the Broadway musical. Just in time for the musical’s North American tour. Unfortunately they’ve hit me where it counts. If they’ve got new information about the musical, I’m going to double dip.
