Universal to remake The Thing… again…

Disc Announcements, News

An obligatory remake of a great remake of a good adaptation…

In 1951 Universal released The Thing From Another World. A low budget sci-fi film about an Arctic research station that uncovers a shape shifting alien that kills them all. The film was based on a story written by John Campbell, Jr.

In 1982 John Carpenter made the definitive remake simple titled The Thing with Kurt Russell.

Yet again, Universal plans to do another remake of The Thing.

Battlestar Galactica executive producer, Ron Moore, will write the script and Matthijs Van Heijningen who up till now has only done commercials will direct this “re-imagining.”

This new version will, like it’s predecessors, borrow heavily from Campbell Jr.’s short story “Who Goes There.”

It will be set in a Norwegian camp and chronicle how the shape-shifting alien is first discovered and overcomes the inhabitants of that camp.

Director Van Heijningen has shot commercials for brands including Toyota, Pepsi, Heineken, Bud Light and Visa. He is also developing Army of the Dead at Warner Bros. with producer Zack Snyder, who also crossed from commercials to features by directing the Dawn of the Dead remake.

(*Author’s Observation: I feel I need to add a little commentary to this piece of news. John Carpenter’s The Thing is a perfect movie and this remake, like most these days, seems totally pointless.)
