The long-awaited Doctor Who specials, David Tennant’s last hurrah as the Time Lord, will finally arrive on U.S. shores this summer. It’s about time.
BBC America announced that they acquired five new Doctor Who specials — four of Tennant’s final adventures in addition to the 2008 Christmas special The Next Doctor, starring David Morrissey and Dervla Kirwan, which will air Saturday, June 27. As fans might recall, The Next Doctor acted as sort of a decoy to the announcement that Matt Smith would actually be the 11th Doctor after Tennant.
July will see the premiere of Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead, in which the Doctor (Tennant) is forced to work with the extraordinary Lady Christina (Bionic Woman’s Michelle Ryan) when a London red bus takes a detour to an alien planet that’s teeming with secrets and is being fast-approached by the deadly Swarm.

Davies and the on-screen dynamic that David Tennant brings to the role are a magic combination for our viewers,” says President, BBC Worldwide America Garth Ancier. “We’re thrilled to bring this iconic show to BBC America, home of the best British sci-fi programming on television.”
Take that, Sci Fi Channel, or SyFy or whatever you’re calling yourself these days.
Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars and the other two as-yet untitled specials will premiere later in 2009 and early 2010.
