Strikeforce To Create Interim Middleweight Belt

News

Cung Le revealed during a chat with Cagewriter (a fantastic blog, by the way) that Strikeforce will soon create an interim middleweight championship. Le’s movie schedule will prevent him from regularly defending the middleweight championship, and I suppose Scott Coker would rather keep the belt on one of his genuine superstars and create an interim championship than to simply strip Le of the belt.

“I talked to Scott and he said he is going to do an interim belt very soon. I talked to him last week and it is going to happen after this fight.”

Personally, I would strip Le of the belt. It’s not personal, it’s simply business, and having your middleweight champion fight once a year, tops, isn’t good for business. It’s also not good for business to water down your main titles by creating multiple interim belts.

The most interest comment from the post, however, was this little nugget from Le regarding a potential jump to the UFC:

“I would love to fight for UFC but I got a contract with Strike Force and Scott Coker has taken good care of me so I just take it one day at a time.”

Sounds to me like Le is already planning his escape.
