Alexis Arguello Found Dead

Alexis Arguello was found dead in his home this morning in Managua, Nicaragua. An autopsy will be conducted but the La Prensa newspaper reported that Arguello had a gunshot wound in his chest. Alexis Arguello was 57.

Alexis Arguello was a world champion in three division and was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992. He was a hero in his home of Nicaragua. He carried the Nicaraguan flag in the 2008 Olympic Games and was elected mayor of Managua later in 2008.

Arguello had a record of 82-8 with 65 knockouts in his career. In 1999, the Associated Press voted Alexis Arguello as the best super featherweight of the 20th century. He had classic battles with Aaron Pryor, Ruben Olivares, and Alfredo Escalera.
