What To Watch: October 2009

Previews

Every month, the boxing staff at Inside Fights recommends a fight or two to watch in the coming month. For no logical reason, those recommendations were always attached to our pound-for-pound rankings. It’s time for our TV picks to branch out into a separate post and we’ve done just that. Take a look at what to watch for in boxing for October.

Oct 2
Allan Green vs. Tarvis Simms – Showtime

Oct 10
Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Rogers Mtagwa – Top Rank PPV
Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Whyber Garcia – Top Rank PPV

Oct 17
Arthur Abraham vs. Jermain Taylor – Showtime
Carl Froch vs. Andre Dirrell – Showtime

Oct 31
Joseph Agbeko vs. Yonnhy Perez – Showtime

As you can tell it is a big month for Showtime. With HBO and Friday Night Fights on ESPN2 taking a break it is the only channel to find quality boxing in October. Of the fights listed above, which one has the most intrigue? The Inside Fights staff offers their recommendations:

Corey’s Pick: Arthur Abraham vs. Jermain Taylor
October 17 on Showtime

With the rescheduling of Pavlik-Williams to December, the fight to watch for October is a no-brainer. All eyes will be on the Super Six World Boxing Classic this month, specifically on the battle between Arthur Abraham and Jermain Taylor on October 17. Although Taylor is coming off a knockout loss to Carl Froch in April, that fight was a classic; in fact, all of Taylor’s losing efforts have been good fights. Abraham, on the other hand, is undefeated and looking to protect his “0.” With the fantastic points system of the Super Six that awards an extra point for a stoppage, both men will be looking to score a knockout. That should mean fireworks since both men hit incredibly hard. Just two years ago and eight pounds south, this was a fight fan’s dream. Thanks to the Super Six and Showtime, that dream is now a reality.

Trent’s Pick: Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Rogers Mtagwa
October 10 on PPV

I know it’s a pay-per-view card. I know you don’t care about Rogers Mtagwa. But you should care about Juan Manuel Lopez. The guy is a star and always engages in exciting fights. His inability to be in a bad fight is just one reason why you should check out this contest. He holds nothing back and you know his opponent will get hit. This fight will likely end in a stoppage and isn’t that what most boxing fans want to see anyway? The equally exciting Yuriorkis Gamboa is in the co-main event. Lopez and Gamboa could be facing each other in 2010 so this is your chance to see what all the fuss is about. If you aren’t already salivating for that potential matchup, this night of fights will surely take you there.
