Jones Jr-Green Preview

Previews

The Roy Jones Nostalgia Tour heads down under as Roy Jones Jr faces Danny Green on Dec 2 in Green’s home country of Australia. The 12-round cruiserweight bout can be seen on same-day tape delay alongside the live bout between Bernard Hopkins and Enrique Ornelas. Coverage begins at 8pm ET Wednesday night on Versus.

Roy Jones Jr. vs. Danny Green

Roy Jones Jr was riding off into the sunset innocently enough. At the twilight of his career, Jones has been more about having fun than cementing his legacy. With Bernard Hopkins not ready to hang ’em up either, Jones’ fight with Danny Green just became a lot more meaningful. Roy has already set up a 2010 HBO pay-per-view date with Bernard Hopkins, provided he gets past the 36-year-old Aussie. With a big payday on the horizon, and the fact that he is fighting on his opponent’s home turf, Roy is finding a lot of reasons to be motivated for this fight.

Danny Green is no slouch, but the fact that Roy’s next fight is already being planned should tell you something. Green is confident and will be itching to put on a good show for his fans but he does not pose a serious threat to a motivated Roy Jones Jr. Green has knockout power, and that will be his only chance against Jones Jr, who is susceptible to a knockout. It would be the biggest win of Green’s career if he could have his hands raised while Roy is staring at the lights. The question he needs to answer is if he can handle the speed of Roy Jones Jr. Even at the age of 40, Roy showed enough quickness to handle Jeff Lacy, and Danny Green isn’t any better than Lacy.

Bernard Hopkins vs. Enrique Ornelas

A lot of boxers don’t like to use the term “tune-up fight.” They feel it disrespects the man they are fighting and also covers their tracks in case they get upset. Enrique Ornelas is a tune-up fight for Bernard Hopkins. Hopkins hasn’t fought since October of 2008, a win over Kelly Pavlik. Ornelas is not a threat to Hopkins. This fight is about shaking off the ring rust and possibly fighting for the last time in front of his hometown Philadelphia fans. Ornelas is coming up in weight for this fight, and he had been dropped a few times at 168. Hopkins may not go for the knockout, but it ought to be an easy night for The Executioner.
