For a while there I thought James Cameron had become Terrence Malick. His last motion picture (not counting documentaries) was in 1997. You may remember it. Something about the “King of the World,” an iceberg, and Kate Winslet’s bare chest. And then came the incredible hype for Avatar that has driven the Net community bonkers.
While Avatar makes its theatrical bow next week, it seems that there won’t be as long a wait for his next project. All signs point to a remake of Fantastic Voyage as Cameron’s next cinematic endeavor.
He won’t helm the project, because the script will be written by Shane Salerno, of Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem. Cameron will act as producer. If he had shown interest in directing, Cameron would write the script himself.
According to Variety, the picture, which centers on a dying scientist whose only chance for survival rests with five colleagues who are miniaturized and injected into his bloodstream, would utilize the same technology that made Avatar so pricey.
In fact, Voyage will go in the same development pipeline along with sequels (potentially) for Avatar. (Cameron talked up two potential sequels during a press conference before Thursday’s London premiere.)
As to who will direct Fantastic Voyage, Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall) has been rumored as a candidate.
