10 Thoughts Review on Wolverine #1 by Jason Aaron and Renatos Guedes

10 Thoughts, Reviews, Top Story

1. Wolverine takes from his religious experience with Nightcrawler and visits Team X member Wraith, now a reverend, only to be supplanted by the devil, with his girlfriend hunted.

2. Wolverine’s problem with religion, he’s usually portrayed as an atheist, is well-handled for the most part, if a bit trite. He’s scared of hope because he’s so often let down.

3. Wraith’s lack of surprise that someone is coming to kill him suits him well, as does his shock that the killer be Logan. Better, though, at least Logan is possessed.

4. The church burning everyone alive with the black preacher is a brave choice, one I’m mildly surprised has caused no outrage.

5. Wolverine looks like his Horseman Death version, which would be a cool twist.

6. Mystique saving Wolverine’s girlfriend is a great twist, notably because Aaron’s awesome Wolverine run really kicked off with the epic “Get Mystique” in which he tried to kill her. With her helping him, things must be dire! Aaron writes a great Mystique and I’m thrilled to see her return.

7. The devil’s pride and enjoyment of his job make him seem menacing. This isn’t the cavalier Lucifer of Mike Carey, but the demon, tempter, soul destroyer of Aaron’s Ghost Rider.

8. The art is good, but not particularly notable. It’s gritty as one would expect from a Wolverine book, but not over the top.

9. Silver Samurai facing a similar challenge to Logan is interesting, but I’m entirely unsure what the point is. Does anyone really care about him that much?

10. Rating: 6/10 – This is a solid opening issue, but we all read the solicits and knew Logan was going to hell for the new series. Besides Mystique, not much more is established than that.
