Wrestler’s Workout: Batista

Columns, Top Story

Batista is one of the most intimidating professional wrestling superstars to ever grace the mat. Standing 6’5” and weighing in at 285 pounds, “The Animal” has an amazing workout plan and a simple diet that helps him look the way he does.

While on the road with the WWE, Batista found himself in an interesting predicament being in one of the top spots: His schedule was absolutely full. Because of this, finding a way to still maintain a workout schedule while still meeting all of his commitments became tough. However, after long thought, he designed a workout program that would be able to give him a full-body workout throughout the week to stay in shape and also not interfere with what he had going on.

Batista works on a three-day training split. Because he would be on the road while on the Raw brand, he would use the house show days in order to work out as house shows usually required less time to be put into them and giving him more free time.

The three-day split consists of working calves and thighs on day one, back, shoulder and traps on day two and finishing the split with chest and arms on the third day. He made sure to note that he trains his abs on random days and doesn’t have a set schedule for when he does.

This split is good and works because nothing can be over trained. By starting with the legs and moving up, the muscle groups do little interaction throughout the exercises as the focus is on the muscles themselves. During each workout session, Batista does about eight exercises at two-to-three sets (his first exercise for each muscle group usually including an extra set to warm up the muscle at a lower weight) for ten-to-fifteen reps each.

When it comes to cardio, Batista keeps it simple as his nightly escapades in the ring usually gives him the cardio he needs to keep his cardiovascular system in shape. When he does do cardio, it consists of a quick 20-minute session on the elliptical just to burn off a few extra calories.

“I don’t push it until I am exhausted or anything like that,” Batista said in an April 2005 interview with Flex Magazine. “We do so much cardio when we are on the road that I don’t want to overdo it.”

Diet is something that wrestlers, especially those in the WWE, do not have a very easy time controlling. When on the road, Batista keeps a very simple diet that consists of eating foods with high proteins and low fats, taking in little carbs. His body has a hard time processing breads and pastas so he takes in natural carbs such as potatoes when his body needs them.

“Sometimes when we’re stuck in an airport and can’t get the food we want, I’ll get a tuna sandwich, scrape the tuna off and just eat that,” Batista said during Flex Magazine’s interview with him.

Batista has worked hard to get to where he is at in the industry. His transformation hasn’t been overnight and it doesn’t stay that way once he gets there. Unlike other wrestlers, Batista says that wrestlers who need inspiration for the gym should just suck it up and go.
