No Chance – A Series of Unrelated Events (SummerSlam, CM Punk / Raw 1000 DVDs, Scooby Doo Movie)

Columns, Top Story

So SummerSlam has ended and it has left me with an overwhelming “meh” feeling. Some parts I enjoyed (Jericho and Ziggler) some I hated (music performance? Really) and some I fell asleep during. (Sheamus and Del Rio) I think the biggest problem though is that there was nothing on the show that I felt really invested in. I feel like I watched the show more out of obligation more than excitement. Last year SummerSlam was all about fallout from CM Punk at MiTB, and the year before it was about the locker room really taking a stand against the Nexus. This year the main story was between two guys who appeared very sporadically and who we all knew would continue to appear very sporadically once SummerSlam was over. For this I blame the lack of a major summer storyline kicking off at the start of the summer. Hopefully we’ll get back to that formula next year.

Brock won on Sunday, so what exactly does that mean? If you will recall Triple H asked that the match take place instead of the lawsuit against the WWE. So does Brock technically own the WWE now? And if not, does that mean that when the match was scheduled, Brock dropped his lawsuit, just cause? And what about Paul Heyman’s second lawsuit? Did that one up and disappear as well? By just participating in this match, did Triple H get rid of both lawsuits? If so, then even if Triple H lost, it would seem that he accomplished what he needed to anyway.

I am counting down the days till October 9th (the day that CM Punk’s DVD is released) more often than not I will patiently wait until the price goes down on a DVD before adding it to the collection but this one will most likely be a first day buy. I’ve thought about holding off on it. After all, surely at this point Punk isn’t going anywhere. He still has some classic DVD classic matches in him and it would seem silly to buy the whole thing now when what may be his eventual best matches won’t be on the set. Plus has it been enough time removed to really see what kind of lasting impact Punk may have had on the audiences and WWE. Surely a documentary and interviews from a few years down the road will provide much better perspective than anything from right now. But then I thought, “wait, it’s CM Punk” and my resolve weakened. Even a phoned in Punk collection will be something that I want, and this one looks to be a lot more than that.

In other DVD news, Raw 1000 is going to be released on DVD. I know that it’s an important and monumental moment in the history of the company but it still feels odd to think about paying money to own a single episode of Raw. However a special feature on the release could be interesting, the Top 100 Moments in WWE Raw History. If this release won’t have the WWF logo blurred on that special feature, it might be worth looking at.

Also, in case you haven’t heard yet, A Scooby Doo movie, slated for a 2014 release will have the gang solve a mystery at WrestleMania, with lots of wrestlers voicing cartoon versions of themselves. One of those reported to be lending their voice though is Sin Cara. Does that mean we’re going to hear Sin Cara will talk sometime in the next year and a half or, (much more likely) are we just making it up as we go along. Well at least the Scooby Doo story will be made with an ending mind, something that seems to be a novel concept for WWE. As long as when they pull the mask off the monster at the end, Hornswoggle isn’t under there.

I feel like I accept a lot of poor storyline continuity on a weekly basis. And I’ve come to accept that and let it go by without comment. But this week on Raw AJ made a stipulation for Dolph where he could lose his MiTB contract to Jericho. Ignoring the fact that AJ can’t technically do that if Dolph doesn’t agree, (WWE put exactly what the “contract” said online in July) how is it that the Raw General Manager has any say as to who is up for the World Heavyweight championship? If Raw has power over the biggest title from SmackDown, then does the SmackDown GM position, have any unique powers or privileges or is that just a Vice GM roll where they can do something if the Raw GM doesn’t care about it.

Speaking of Jericho, his contract was terminated on the 1004th episode of Raw. It’s a coincidence, but a cool one.
