Digital Overload – Week of November 23, 2012

Columns, Top Story

With the holiday cutting my writing week short, I am just doing some mini-reviews and the digital list for the week. I am hoping to have a focus on Thrillbent next week!

Digital First Releases On Comixology this week

DC Comics

Ame-Comi Girls #11

Written by: Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray
Artist by: Eduardo Francisco
Colored by: Wes Hartman
Lettered by:Wed Abbott

This issue mostly focuses on Atom attempting to perform microscopic surgery on Supergirl to remove some black kryptonite from her body while Power Girl is trying to physically restrain her cousin.

I liked Atom’s background quite a bit. I thought it made for a really interesting take on the character, and fit really well with the world they have been setting up in Ame-Comi.

That said, the real highlight of this issue for me was the introduction of Sinestra on the last page. Thankfully, she doesn’t look anywhere near as cartoony as she did on the cover…actually, she kind of looked badass, as a female version of one of my favorite villains should.

My major gripe is that this second arc for Ame-Comi has felt a little all over the place at times, and they really need to start pulling it all together into one narrative soon.

Arrow #7

Story by Marc Guggenheim & Andrew Kreisberg
Script by Beth Schwartz
Art by Jorge Jimenez
Colored by David Lopez and Santi Casas of Ikari Studio
Lettered by Wes Abbott

Another real strong standalone issue of Arrow. Ollie’s friend Tommy Merlin wants to take him out for a night on the town, but Ollie’s alter ego has been accused of stealing some jewels. With the help of his associate Diggle, Ollie tries to maintain both aspects of his life at the same time, and ends up once again failing at being Ollie, even as he has success as the Hood.

Some of my favorite moments in the show are when Ollie is trying to balance his two lives, and this issue shows that perfectly.  One thing I really want to see is one of these issues expand some on Ollie’s time on the island.  This format seems like it would be ideal to expand on some of the flashback sequences this show does so well.

Justice League Beyond #15

Written by Derek Fridolfs & Dustin Nguyen
Pencils by Dustin Nguyen
Inks by Derek Fridolfs
Colored by Randy Mayor
Lettered by Saida Temofonte

It really is never easy to bring a huge 12 part story to a finish, but the JLB team did it brilliantly here. Loose ends from Kobra’s massive attacks are dealt with, long lost characters return (including Mister Miracle who has long been a favorite character), and we start to see the Justice League heading in an entirely new direction.

I loved all the character moments here, including Waller and Superman mourning Jimmy Olsen’s sacrifice (what is with digital comics and making Jimmy into some uberhero?), and Bruce talking about everything that has happened to Jason Blood over the years.

I also loved the impact of the last moment with Darkseid tossing Kobra’s spellbook into the firepits as “Less than Nothing.” I can’t even tell you why, but I felt like spiders crawled up my spine when he said that.

Justice League Beyond continues to be a great addition to the Beyond line, and I am definitely looking forward to see the team start to rebuild after this long and satisfying arc.

Smallville #22

Written by Bryan Q. Miller
Penciled by Kevin West
Inked by Marc Deering
Colored by Carrie Strachan
Lettered by Saida Temofonte

I have to admit, when I saw that cover, I really thought that was Steel. Was kind of disappointed that it was just Clark wearing an armor that Batman designed for him.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago back in our Top Seven Guilty Pleasures column, I have never really even watched Smallville, but I liked Bryan Q. Miller’s work on Batgirl, and was drawn in by the rumor of Stephanie Brown as Nightwing. Even though that ended up not being true, I have still liked this book quite a bit! It is probably the best portrayal of Superman and Green Arrow that DC puts out right now!

This issue continues Superman and Batman’s battles against Mister Freeze and Toyman. Seeing how the “World’s Finest” heroes met and became allies in the Smallville universe has been just awesome. This arc has gone on for 10 issues now, but I am no where ready for it to be over!

Rating: 8.5/10
