Murtz On The Scene: Exclusive Interview With Insurgent‘s Jai Courtney

One of the most anticipated films of the year is Insurgent, and the March 20 theatrical adaptation of the second book in Veronica Roth’s trilogy is certainly expected to challenge The Hunger Games and Twilight in terms of box office numbers.

Serving as the sequel to last year’s Divergent, Insurgent picks up immediately where the last film left off. When Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) learns about Erudite’s plan to seize government control, she teams up with Four (Theo James) to abolish the entire system. Led by the calculating Jeanine Mathews (Kate Winslet), Erudite drugs the Dauntless faction and uses them as a defacto military. The only ones immune to the drugs are Divergents (those who do have ties to any singular faction) and (as a result), Tris and Four serve as cogs to Matthews’ plan for new world domination. Transformed by her own decisions but also by the grief and guilt she feels over the deaths of Will and her parents in the first film, Tris must now fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

On Tuesday, I caught up with Jai Courtney on the Insurgent red carpet at the Canadian premiere of the film at the Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto. I asked him about whether about playing a villain and if he sympathized with Eric’s motivations in the book. I also asked him about he managed to jump back and forth between the Insurgent and Terminator Genisys set as the Australian actor filmed both movies simultaneously. Finally, we chatted about the way that his character is handled in the movie as Eric’s treatment is slightly altered from the way he is presented in the book. Check out the video above!
