Here is a quick look at some highlights on the shelves this week. DC is kicking off a few new series this month and Marvel’s Secret Wars continues with a bunch of tie-ins. If you’re trying to find a new place to start on some series, I’ve also included a list of TPBs I’d recommend checking out this week…

Mad Max: Fury Road – Furiosa #1Mad Max FuriosaWritten by George Miller, Nico Lathouris, & Mark Sexton; Art by Tristan Jones; Cover by Tommy Lee Edwards

  • Another prequel to the film, this series tells the story of how Furiosa helped Immortan Joe’s wives escape his clutches. Co-written by the original creator, this is a must-have for any fan.

Astronauts in Trouble #1 – Written by Larry Young; Art and Cover by Charlie Adlard

  • Previously the flagship graphic novel of AiT/Planet Lar Comics, Astronauts in Trouble’s artist Charlie Adlard caught the attention of Robert Kirkman, leading them to create the Walking Dead! So far, I’m unable to tell if these are new stories or reprints of the original.

The Fiction #1 – Written by Curt Pires; Art and Regular Cover by David Rubin; Variant Covers by Frazier Irving and Tula Lotay

  • As kids, four friends read from ancient books and travelled to wonderful imaginative lands. After one of the kids went missing, the rest closed the books and vowed never to tell anyone what happened. Now, as adults, another of the friends has disappeared, and the remaining two seek to find a connection through those old books.

Southern Bastards #9 – Written by Jason Aaron; Art and Cover Jason Latour

  • The third arc of this critically acclaimed series begins! If you haven’t read the rest of the series, Vols. 1 & 2 collecting issues #1-8 are out now. If you liked Aaron’s Scalped, I highly recommend checking it out.

DC’s NEW #1’s & ARCS!

Convergence is over, as are Futures End and Batman: Eternal, meaning every title should be taking place in present day; no more time jumps to confuse some of us readers! Most DC titles this month are either new series or new arcs which makes this a great time to pick up any long-running series you’ve been curious about or get in on the ground floor of a new series. • I’m glad to see J’onn J’onzz is getting his own book! I’ve been wanting to read more about him where he’s the focus instead of part of a team, and now that time is here!
