Spoilers, Top Story

DC Comics and Batman: The Detective #1 Spoilers and Review follows.

Who and Why Are The Gun-Toting White Batmen?!

There are a few more variant covers for the issue in addition to the above.

Plus the main cover.

A plane is hijacked over the United Kingdom, but no ransom will be sought…

…just death in Batman’s name?!

Before these rogue Batmen and Batwomen in white complete their plan, Britain’s Batman aka the Knight was on board and tries to take them out…

…quite literally as she uses one of them to break her fall from the airplane, but she still gets quite the damage topped off by a gunshot as…

…the plane crashes, the passengers die and the nearest landmark is graffitied with “Batman 147”.

In Gotham City, an older, tired Batman ponders what has happened to him…

…whether he’s done any good as the dark detective and…

…what’s keeping him Gotham City when…

…a plane crash scene in the U.K. has his name over it quite literally; so it appears nothing is holding Batman to Gotham City any more and it looks like even after he may solve this mystery he has no plans of returning to the city that has synonymous with him for generations.

At the crash scene in the U.K. Batman quickly realizes he’s not alone…

…asking the Squire to show herself; this is the Knight’s current partner who took up the one-time sidekick mantle of her elder partner.

However, the Gentleman Ghost attacks…

…in quite a different form, but is able to punch him out and hold his own with mystical gloves courtesy of John Constantine.

Batman finally visits the Knight in the hospital.

They discuss the new Squire, but Batman’s safeguards have revealed that the white Batmen are in the hospital after the Knight?! Not sure why they didn’t just kill her at the crash scene considering they shot her.

The Squire confronts them, but…

…she is not alone.

The white Batmen actually flee from the elderly Batman, but…

…not before he was able to capture one of them for interrogation and…

…learns all of the passengers on the flights where people Batman has saved over the years?!

The Pulse:

The mystery that brings Batman to the U.K. is intriguing as is where Batman is in his life. The art is sufficiently dark yet balanced with light when needed to advance the story. Writer Tom Taylor and artist Andy Kubert are shooting on all pistons as they redefine Batman for a new generation. A complex and compelling page-turner. 9 out pf 10.
