Star Trek: Discovery to Conclude with Fifth and Final Season in Early 2024

Celebrate one of Paramount+’s longest-running original dramas globally with events around the world leading up to the series’ finale!

The final epic season of Star Trek: Discovery will conclude in early 2024.

The series first premiered in 2017 and heralded the return of scripted Star Trek television series. Leading up to the final season, Paramount+ will honor Star Trek: Discovery’s legacy and groundbreaking storytelling over its last four seasons with year-long celebrations and appearances at events around the world.

“Star Trek: Discovery is a perennial favorite on the service, near and dear to the hearts of legions of Star Trek fans as well as all of us here at Paramount+,” said Tanya Giles, chief programming officer at Paramount Streaming. “The series and its incredible cast and creatives ushered in a new era for Star Trek when it debuted over six years ago, embracing the future of streaming with serialized storytelling, bringing to life deep and complex characters that honor Gene Roddenberry’s legacy of representing diversity and inclusion, and pushing the envelope with award-winning world-building. This final season will see our beloved crew take on a new adventure and we can’t wait to celebrate the series’ impact on the franchise leading up to its final season early next year.”

Executive producers and co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise shared: “As lifelong fans of Star Trek, it has been an immense honor and privilege to help bring Star Trek: Discovery to the world. The fifth and final season will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well … dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.

Dearest Disco Family,

You discovered the mycelial network with us. You were there when we greeted Georgiou, Spock, Pike and Una … as we jumped into the future … as our heroes restored the Federation, solved the DMA and left their home galaxy … as Michael Burnham, former mutineer, sat in the Captain’s chair for the very first time.

There is much adventure yet to come in season five – but today we share the bittersweet news that after 65 incredible episodes with Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery, the upcoming season premiering in early 2024 will be our last. No series continues forever, of course, so this day was always going to come. We are forever grateful to have been able to share such an amazing journey with you.

Thank you for your love of DISCOVERY. Thank you for inviting us into your homes, and for trusting us with this show. Thank you for appreciating and supporting our incredible cast and crew. Thank you for the passion and excitement you’ve brought to this fandom – online, at conventions, and when we’ve seen you out in the world. We’ve loved meeting you, hearing what DISCOVERY means to you, and getting to share what it means to us, too. And rest assured, we’re not going anywhere just yet! There’s still work to be done to finish season five and we’re excited for you to see our exciting and satisfying conclusion. …Kurtzman has also teased the development of another potential spinoff, Star Trek: Academy, which would focus on a new generation of young cadets. Nothing has been officially announced yet on that front, however. Kurtzman is one of Paramount Global’s most important producers and has delivered hits outside of the Trek franchise for Paramount_ through his deal with CBS Studios. He inked his second nine-figure overall deal with the David Stapf-led CBS Studios in 2021…

This now leaves Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, with Season 2 coming this year, as the Flagship Star Trek program as Star Trek: Picard is ending this year too with Season 3.

…The departure of Discovery secures its spin-off Star Trek: Strange New Worlds the undisputed new captain of Paramount+’s Star Trek series fleet. Strange New Worlds embraced the more planet-of-the-week style of The Original Series and launched last May to a 99 percent positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. Paramount+ said Strange New Worlds was the most-watched new Trek series on the services over its first 90 days and the company touted the series in a Super Bowl ad last month. The show returns for season 2 sometime this year…
