Blu-ray Review: We Go On (Remastered – Special Edition)

Blu-ray Reviews, Reviews, Top Story

Is there any way for us to know what happens after we die? Do we go to Heaven? Are we reincarnated? Do our souls enter the cosmos? Do we become spirits that haunt houses eagerly awaiting a psychic crew from a Travel Channel show to put us on TV? Or is this it and we only live on through the memories of friends and odd items we leave behind? What proof can there be? Sure, there’s that little kid’s book about meeting angels in heaven during the minutes he was brain dead. Although the kid later recanted everything. We Go On is about a guy who is willing to pay to get a clue that there’s more to life than returning to dust.

Miles (Narcos: Mexico‘s Clark Freeman) has quite a few phobias and hates leaving his apartment. This isn’t too bad for him since he spends his time editing those lame infomercials that play all night on cable channels. When his aunt dies, she leaves him $30,000. Instead of using it for a fun weekend in Vegas or a nicer sofa, Miles decides to take out an ad in a newspaper. He will give the money to anyone who can prove what happens after you die. He is swamped with videos featuring “proof” and phone calls from people that swear they have the answer. His mom (Cat People‘s Annette O’Toole) is at first not happy that he’s doing this with his inheritance, but becomes fascinated with helping him sort out the hucksters from people who just might have an answer. The son and mother hit the road to see if they’ll be giving out the big check like Ed McMahon once did. While they expose quite a few people as fakers, Miles least likely candidate turns out to have more than proof. They bring a fully formed nightmare into his life.

We Go On is a great little horror film that starts out as a skeptics’ journey and transforms into the ultimate fear. The special effects have been remastered for this version. The upgrade makes things a bit more of a fright for Miles and the viewers. If you’ve caught the film since its 2016 debut, you’ll enjoy revisiting the road trip. Beyond the new special effects, is the interaction between Miles and his mom. Rarely do you see a guy’s mom get this involved in a horror film plot unless she’s secretly the monster killing everyone. Although there is a chance that Miles’ mom is being the puppet master of the beyond. The interaction between Annette O’Toole and Clark Freeman put this movie a step up from the normal supernatural horror films that you can watch on a certain streaming site.

The film reunites Annette O’Toole, John Glover and Cassidy Freeman from Smallville. Miles’ apartment building might look familiar for fans of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. There is nothing sunny about the last half of We Go On as the action and shocks escalate for Miles. He might be better off being surprised than getting a taste of the afterlife.

Co-Director/Writer Commentary with Andy Mitton. He gets into the impact the film has had on fans over the years. He talks about being starstruck meeting Annette O’Toole at a coffee shop to discuss the role. She like the idea of an adult male and his mother taking part in a horror film.
