Ultimate Marvel Handbook #202

Features

Sorry all about last week. I wasn‘t feeling all to well and we only got a select amount of emails. So I held this till today. I‘m feeling better now and hope you all don‘t mind the late issue. Hey Daron how are you?

Tired and sick of work. So pretty much the same as normal.

I‘m sorry about that bud. But up now and there’s some interesting stuff this week. I hope everyone enjoys it. Let‘s start.

Indeed, I hope the lateness this week doesn’t keep people from emailing so we can get another issue up this weekend. *hint hint*

well as daron already knows i will of course be in pittsburgh for the con. i only live 10 minutes away from it and all, but on to my question. has blackbolt ever really unloaded on anyone? i have seen an issue or too when he let out a whisper and blew some stuff up, but has he ever let out a full out shout? i know in earth x he screamed into space, but i don’t want to count that one since it is a what if type story.

At someone not really. But he’s used his powers in full a few times.

Black Bolt was born to two of Attilan’s top geneticists, Agon, head of the ruling Council of Genetics, and Rynda, director of the Prenatal Care Center. Subjected to the mutagenic Terrigen Mist while still an embryo, Bolt was born with strange powers surpassing even the Inhumans’ norm. As an infant, he demonstrated certain energy-manipulative abilities which he could not yet control, particularly that of producing quasi-sonic energy of great destructive potential. To protect the community, he was placed inside a sound-proofed chamber and given an energy-harnessing suit. There he was schooled in the art of controlling his powers until the age of nineteen, when he was permitted to enter society.
A month after being awarded his freedom, Black Bolt discovered his younger brother Maximus in the process of making a treacherous pact with emissaries of the alien Kree. Attempting to stop the Kree ship before it escaped, Bolt used the forbidden power of his quasi-sonic voice to knock the ship out of the sky. When the ship crashed to Earth, it landed on the parliament, killing several key members of the Council of Genetics, including his parents, Agon and Rynda. The reverberations of his brother’s shout affected Maximus’s sanity and suppressed his nascent mental powers. Despite his guilt and silent protests, Black Bolt was obligated to accept the mantle of leadership of the Inhumans at age twenty.

Black Bolt’s first crisis in leadership came when his cousin Triton was briefly held captive by humans. Learning of Triton’s encounter upon his escape , Black Bolt decided that the Inhuman’ island of Attilan was in imminent danger of discovery by humanity. Black Bolt scouted out possible sites to which to move, and settled upon the remote Himalayan mountains. After the great migration, Black Bolt faced his second great crisis when his now mad brother Maximus unleashed the Trikon, three of the Inhumans’ worker drones who were transformed into energy-beings. The Trikon enabled Maximus to wrest the rule of the Inhuman from his brother and send Black Bolt and the other members of the Royal Family into exile. For the next few years, Black Bolt and his kinsmen wandered Asia, Europe, and finally America, in search of Medusa, his betrothed mate, who had been separated from the others during the battle with the Trikon. Eventually Black Bolt was reunited with Medusa and the Royal Family returned to Attilan and resumed the crown.

Black Bolt has led the Inhumans through some of the most turbulent times in their history, including several more attempts by Maximus to usurp the throne, revolts by the worker class, attacks by human renegades, the kidnapping of Medusa, the destruction and rebuilding of Attilan, the revelation of the Inhuman existence to humanity, and several more relocations of Attilan. Following the traditionally lengthy period of betrothal, Black Bolt and Medusa were wed.

His role as king of the Inhumans has been tumultous. The first major crisis when he and Medusa conceived a child. Medusa bore the child in defiance of the Genetic Council who felt that Black Bolt’s bloodline was too dangerous to pass on. The Council nonetheless took the child to examine, and forbade parental contact. Black Bolt was torn between his love of family and his duty to respect the Genetic Council, and it was only when the Council was revealed to be using his son in a plot against him that he finally turned against the Council. With that, he also gave up the crown as king of the Inhumans. For a while, they lived away from Attilan, but returned in times of need. After the Heroes Reborn arc, he seemed to have been re-instated as monarch without much further explanation, but was subsequently exiled after Attilan’s forced adventure with Ronan in space. He returned again to the moon with his Royal Family after being banned from Earth, and again it seemed that the rest of the Inhuman population soon rejoined them there and reaffirmed his role as king without much ado.

He has been described as “never defeated in battle”. This is technically true for the times that he has allowed himself to use his powers to the fullest. However, there are examples where he has been temporarily disabled by an opponent when he has chosen not to use his voice (likely for fear of destroying the surroundings).

Of late, there has been an exploration of the ongoing inequities and injustices of the caste-bound Attilan society, and Black Bolt does seem to turn a blind eye to much of it. It could be that as a product of that environment, he accepts the status quo as a given: this would make him a benevolent yet flawed ruler. Given his exposure to the outside world (and his own stand previously against the genetic Council), this seems unlikely. Given his ever changing status as ruler, he likely sees limits to any further changes that he could realistically make to the social fabric at this point (after all, it was only not so long ago during his reign that the alpha primitives were emancipated). He has been a great leader in ensuring the survival of Attilan against threats from outside and in; perhaps he is biding his time, awaiting a period of stability before again turning his considerable leadership skills to issues of social justice.

Overall, Black Bolt’s combination of overwhelming power with self-imposed silence, as well as his responsibilities as both superhero and monarch, have made him one of the more intriguing creations of Kirby and Lee. An air of mystery surrounds Black Bolt, maintained by his silence, and accentuated by the convention of not grafting thought balloons onto him. Finally, even in a universe of superheroes, Black Bolt stands out as an icon of nobility. The mythic nature of this being was well highlighted in the second Inhumans series written by Paul Jenkins (who in fact was able to derive much tension from Black Bolt not using his incredible powers to annihilate his kingdom’s attackers).

Wow. I bet you weren’t expecting a whole run down on Black Bolt’s history with that question were ya Ryan?

It’s really sticking in my craw, seeing Stan Lee place the Torch and Wyatt Wingfoot in the Kozy Kampus Koffee Shop (Fantastic Four circa #51).

K. K. K.

What’s the deal? There was a bit of trouble in the place, but nothing racial, and it’s way too obvious to be nothing. Some Freudian slip by Stan? Or was the location used another time(s) and racial stuff went down?

Different times in fact. The KKK was around but Stan didn‘t mean it as such. The thing with Stan was easy ways to recall things. Like the characters themselves.

BB: Bruce Banner
MM: Matt Murdock
RR: Reed Richards

Stan was very classic at doing this commonly. Nothing to be racist and the like since Stan created some characters to deal with race matters.

What he said…

Cory here….late, but here….Happy Easter boys & away we go:

Hey Cory. No problem. We‘re late too

1. About the Hulk’s return, is it determined who we will clash with? Like will he only go after the Illuminati and then the heroes will be forced to help or will he just go at everyone in a costume?

He’s going to clash with mostly everyone on the most part. Not just the Illuminati. I think the Illuminati are the prime targets of course though.

2. I also noticed a BIG trend in how angry the Hulk has gotten since making his way back to Earth….Punching Uatu in the face (just for watching) and fighting against Black Bolt on the moon (and delivered one of the best lines I heard in a while). I suspect more amazing things in the future, but when it is all said and done, who will stop him, any ideas? I mean Betty is dea….I mean “resting”. Dare we say a Thor vs. Hulk match?

I could see Thor if he did get involved. I would go for another Hulk/Thor fight. Maybe Strange will have to come up with a spell to stop him. I know there’s a third part of this coming. What it is I don’t know but Hulk won’t be stopped easy

3. Me & my comic book dealer were discussing a few things. Ok, Steve Rogers was stuck in a state of suspended animation in a block of ice for many years before Avengers #4. While there he didn’t age, functions ceased, and was just there. But 4 gunshots killed him?? Where’s the logic in that? The serum has to have been enhanced or did something to combat those shots, the same way it did in that ice. The shots just seems like a lesser extreme compared to the ice. He might just be in a state of suspended animation again, I mean who was alive or around back in the day to remember that anyway?

Not many. Only a few are still alive. Plus no one knows the Super soldier serum too well. So it’s possible it’s a coma or suspended animation. We’ll find out for sure soon enough.

Also Captain America has been presumed killed or has been killed and resurrected many times during his fictional lifetime in the Marvel universe. These include in comics from these years:

1964 – presumed dead in an explosion caused by Baron Zemo; later revealed to have been plunged into a state of suspended animation after falling into cold water
1969 – presumed murdered by HYDRA; in the following issue, Steve Rogers admits to having faked his death so he could retire peacefully, and becomes Captain America again several issues later.
1978 – murdered by Korvac, who then resurrects him (on the next page)
1984 – killed during the events of the Secret Wars; resurrected in the following issue.
1989 – after being forced to give up the mantle of Captain America by the U.S. government, Rogers eventually reclaims the title from his replacement, John Walker, who as Captain America is killed and later resurrected to become US Agent
1992 – presumed assassinated by The Punisher and given a state funeral; it was later revealed that his death was faked for the Punisher’s benefit
1996 – Captain America’s supersoldier serum degrades and causes irreparable cellular damage; the Red Skull reverses the damage, though not until after Captain America is clinically dead.
1996 – presumed killed by Onslaught; eventually revealed to have been transported to a “pocket universe” and returns to normal Marvel universe continuity the following year
2001 – presumed killed by a bomb set off by Nazi soldiers living out their retirement in New Jersey; several months later, Captain America reappears in Marvel continuity without explanation
2003 – killed by Thanos; later, Adam Warlock manipulates reality to prevent that and other events from having occurred
2005 – killed alongside Wolverine at the hands of Thor in an alternate future

Quite correct on this as well

4. So after reading The Initiative #1, should we chalk up another death to Iron Man for the character of “MVP”. I was actually starting to like his character, before his demise. Although that last page had me thinking. The german sounding doctor may have found something in MVP’s blood, that may also explain Steve Rogers’s. You think?

I‘ve read reports of his demise might be to soon. I‘ve read that he might not be dead and could very well return.

5. Also why would marvel bring back Captain Marvel just to die rather quickly? Also what’s up with the possibility of Cap’s body not being a LMD, but a shape-shifter? Let’s run through a list of which ones could possibly imitate Cap?

Well I doubt Mar-Vell will die to soon for some reason. I know there’s talk of him meeting Phyla-Vell at the least.

As for how Cap was fake or still alive.

You ran the one theory above that he’s not dead but in suspended animation
2. LMD replaced Cap. Knowing Cap would be a target. But the problem is how did Wolverine not pick up on this.
Dead but able to come back threw Cosmic cube Bucky has
Dead but Strange brings him back
Dead but Thor brings him back
Dead but Wanda brings him back
Not dead and faked to make Skull think he’s dead. Wolverine is in on it. Fury is behind it

6. Besides Cap, who else has lifted Thor’s hammer in Marvel? Has the Hulk?

Hulk hasn’t but

Odin
Captain America
Beta Ray Bill
Buri
Red Norvell with the aid of magical gauntlets
Eric Masterson
Awesome Android
Dargo Ktor
Magni
Woden

Why did I think Spidey had lifted at some point? Did he not?

7. Is it me, or does anyone else think the Illuminati will try, attempt, or question whether to use the Infinity Gems on the Hulk? I can see that happening as a last resort.

Of course they will. I mean I know they said they won’t be used but I can see them thinking about it. I mean it’s the best way to try to stop Hulk.

Short week for me, but as always. Thanks guys. Have a great holiday, Make Mine Marvel, and see ya in 7.

See you next time Cory.

Wow…this one really was late, huh?

That’s it from here. What did you think Daron?
