A light heavyweight bout between Anthony Johnson (15-4, 2-0 WSOF) and Mike Kyle (21-8-1 2 NC, 0-0 WSOF) will serve as the main event when the World Series Of Fighting runs their fifth event in September in New Jersey. Promotion officials announced the bout in a press release on Monday.
Johnson will be fighting for the third time in the WSOF promotion, and is looking to build on a win streak that was extended to five in his last bout. He defeated Andrei Arlovski by unanimous decision in the main event of WSOF 2 in March, his first fight as a heavyweight. He will be moving back down to light heavyweight, where he scored a knockout win over D.J. Linderman at WSOF 1 in November. Johnson’s five-fight win streak signals all of the fights he has had since his UFC release, and he is 7-1 over his last eight bouts.
Kyle will be making his promotional debut against Johnson. Kyle is a veteran of the UFC, Strikeforce and WEC promotions, and he flirted with retirement following a stretch of just one win in four appearances in the Strikeforce promotion, which did not bring him over to the UFC following the merger of the two promotions. He decided to continue to compete, and he returned with a 21-second knockout win over Travis Wiuff in May.
WSOF 5 takes place on Sept. 14 from Revel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The main card will air on the NBC Sports Network. Additional fights will be announced in the coming weeks, and tickets for the event go on sale on Friday.
