AAA wrestler Pedro Aguayo Ramirez, (better known as Hijo del Perro Aguayo), died tragically earlier today in a hospital in Mexico after taking a dropkick and a 619 from Rey Mysterio, (real name Oscar Juarez), in Rey’s first match the night before following his recent long sought release from WWE. According to PWTorch.com;
“According to news reports, El Hijo took the 619 in the trachea trying to avoid the move, causing severe whiplash. El Hijo was placed on a backbrace by paramedics and taken out of the Municipal Auditorium arena to Del Prado hospital.“
Mysterio is reported to be wracked with guilt, and trolls joking that Rey “killed it in his first match back” on Twitter are probably not helping any.
Wrestling may not be a “real sport”, but it IS full body contact stunt work, and sometimes things go wrong. From Darren Drozdov being paralyzed to HHH’s torn quads, no matter how careful these athletes are to protect each other in the ring, there is ALWAYS a risk of something going seriously tragically wrong.
I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say my thoughts are with Pedro’s loved ones right now. I’m going to light a candle for him.
Wrestling may be “fake”, but the risks are still all too real.
Ramirez was 35. He is survived by his cousins, also wrestlers.
RIP Pedro, July 23, 1979 – March 21, 2015
