Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cain Velasquez to headline UFC 108

News

After months of speculations and high hopes for UFC 108, the UFC’s year end show has finally landed an official main event. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez are set to headline the Jan. 2 card in Las Vegas, Nevada, the UFC has officially announced.

Nogueira is coming off a unanimous decision victory over fellow mixed martial arts veteran Randy “The Natural” Couture. The fight was a big comeback for “Minotauro”, who had lost to Frank Mir last December to lose out on a shot to unify titles with UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

Velasquez just rolled through UFC newcomer Ben Rothwell at UFC 104 last month. Prior to his technical knockout victory over the former IFL heavyweight champion, he defeated Cheick Kongo via unanimous decision at UFC 99. The American Kickboxing Academy product will put his undefeated record on the line at UFC 108.

While the fight will prove whether or not Nogueira is still relevant, and whether or not Velasquez can face top tier heavyweights, it will also determine who receives a title shot. However, Lesnar is still sick, and his bout with Shane Carwin still does not have a new date. By the time UFC 108 rolls around, the future for the heavyweight division should be a lot clearer.

UFC 108 is set for Las Vegas, Nev. on Jan. 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. A light heavyweight bout between Thiago Silva and Rashad Evans is also featured on the card. Stay tuned to Inside Fights on breaking news and updates surrounding UFC 108.
