UPDATED: Please see the sad news about the passing of Gene Colan here.

Legendary artist Gene Colan has been hospitalized and is expecting to have surgery that will likely be very costly.

Here are a few updates from Gene Colan’s friend Clifford Meth including auction information in support of Gene’s hospital expenses:

Thursday April 21, 2011 – Gene Colan went to the ER this morning at 3 a.m. He was having trouble breathing and was in terrible pain. His son tells me that he is in stable condition.

Well-wishers can send cards to:

Saturday April 23, 2011 – It appears that a procedure for Gene has been decided on; no date on when this will take place. Gene is nothing but positive–he still has big plans for the future and views everything that’s going on as just “one more bump in the road”–typical of this unique man’s resilience and forever positive outlook.

Sunday April 24, 2011 – Despite his legendary optimism, Gene’s situation is tenuous. His family hopes he can undergo a procedure early this week that may alleviate his pain. Regardless, it’s unlikely that my pal will be drawing for anyone anytime soon.

To continue generating what might become much-needed funds, we are selling off the last of Gene’s artwork, as well as some books and comics. Gene hopes to continue signing comics for the CGC Signature Series. If you have comics that you would like to put through this process, please contact me ASAP (at cliffmeth@aol.com).

…To bid send an email to cliffmeth@aol.com – put “Colan Auction Bid” in the subject. In the body of your email, indicate the item # that you are bidding on and its description. Bidding on all items will end on Sunday May 8 at 11pm EST and winners will be notified.

As you can tell from the excerpts above, much of what’s left of Gene’s art is being auctioned off as well as some comics and books. The list of items being auctioned can be found here. Prices are very reasonable. Most of the signed books or comics start with bids under $50 and the art offered so far is for starting bid of around $150. There is a big full-color recreation of 1968’s Iron Man #1 by Gene with a starting bid of $5000.

Health updates on Gene will be posted here.
