Hilary Swank Joining Matthew McConaughey In The Dallas Buyer’s Club

Casting News, News, Projects

Matthew McConaughey doesn’t seem like the actor who would put his name to a project that is based on a true story that deals with AIDS and toying with underground drugs. The star of the recent hit, The Lincoln Lawyer, agreed to The Dallas Buyer’s Club after the project had long grown stale. Other actors had committed at one point (including Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling) but there was no movement.

Now it looks to be moving forward with the addition of actress Hilary Swank, and the rights were picked up at Cannes by Content Films.

The film is based on the true story of Ron Woodruff and is set in the mid-’80s when AIDS was becoming more prevalent in the United States. Diagnosed with the disease and given a death sentence that is to occur a few months from now, Ron tries to beat the reaper by toying with underground drugs that have not been approved by the FDA. The guinea pig test on himself proved successful, extending his life expectancy, so he decided to get the drugs to other AIDS victims as well.

Though the project had Marc Forster and Craig Gillespie attached to direct at one point, it looks like Jean Marc-Vallée (The Young Victoria) will occupy the director’s chair.
