Fiona Apple Is Really Really Sorry About Hash Arrest

Fiona Apple took time out during a recent concert to apologize profusely for all the "bullshit" surrounding her recently, such as her arrest for possession of hash.  She admitted that it was detracting from her new record, and clarified that she did »»

More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks: Recent Revelations

I guess I should apologize to Joanna Newsom. I gave Have One on Me another shot, and it’s actually not a bad album. I think it’s just that the damn thing was so over-hyped as the best thing since sliced bread that there was no way it could have lived up to the hype. ... »»

More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks: B-Day Mix!

I’ve got a coworker whose birthday is on Sunday. She’s quite the character. We’re pretty much on the same page when it comes to matters of pop culture and even events at work. ... Since her birthday is on Sunday I figured I’d make her mix and she requested songs by females. Here is that mix... »»

MGF Presents My Top 21 of the 21st (So Far…)

It’s nutty. This was the first decade where I was an adult through the entire thing, thus it’s the first decade where I’ve really been able to have an opinion about the “best of the decade” topics. It’s a weird feeling; it’s excitement coupled with obligation. ... »»

MGF Reviews Black Light Burns - Cover Your Heart

Since this is intended, according to Borland, as an interim piece between Cruel Melody and Black Light Burns' next album (scheduled for release in 2009), the fact that it seems like two separate EPs thrown together really shouldn't be something for which we fault the band. It's got some great tracks... »»

More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks - More Things I Left Behind

There was no way that I could have brought my computer with when I moved back to Baltimore. It would have been impossible. So lamenting the fact that I don't have it is juvenile. I can't (yet) afford to pay the price to have it shipped out here, and I couldn't have brought it with me. That narrows down my options to "none." Still, I'm missing my computer badly, and for numerous reasons... »»

More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks - Thursday Night Ritual

So for the past month and a half, I've had this particularly Thursday night ritual. Every Thursday night/Friday morning (depending on how you view the changing of the day) I scour the Internet in search of a song; I do it for hours and I never find it. Y'see, in early March I began watching a ten-episode miniseries on Sundance called Terminal City (maybe one day I'll write about it for Primetime Pulse). It's a show about a family—husband, wife, three kids and two grandparents. The wife gets cancer and her own reality show. In that order. It's really a quality show. From what I gather it's been crowned the Canadian Six Feet Under, which in my book is high praise. »»

More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks - The Resolution Recap

In February 2007, I set out on a mission; devote a week each to fifty-two albums that somehow got lost in the shuffle after I purchased them. I figured that by putting them in heavy rotation for seven days it would atone for the years of neglect they'd suffered. And here we are, a year and two months later and I'm finally done. I actually finished listening to the last album on the list a month ago, but somewhere along the line I'd gotten behind on the write-ups—a month behind. Still, when that last day rolled around I was pretty happy to clear that final album from my iPod. All in all, I think the project was a success. There were a few albums in my collection that were, up to that point, there just for show. But now I can not only say "that album sucks/rocks" but I can also suggest tracks that a person may enjoy. »»

Short Attention Span Theater

Come inside, come inside. There's some musical philosophy, a review of a free EP, a rant against posers, fun, frivolity, and a whole heaping helping of snark. Poppin' Off on the Top This week's Top 10 Hot Modern Rock Singles, as per 1. Foo Fighters, "Long Road to Ruin" Not to offend all the Grohl Trolls out there, but I keep wanting to be as impressed by the Foos as everyone else seems to be and I'm still not getting it. I loved the first album when it came out; I was too young and stupid to realize I was listening to Nirvana's reject bin. Every album since then, they've delved more and more into power pop to the point that I'm a little embarrassed to call them "rock" anymore. Dave is a talented songwriter and musician, and his side projects rarely if ever miss. His voice, though, is just too soothing and sedate to do justice to the songs he's writing. If "Long Road to Ruin" was made by Maroon 5 or someone rather than a band that everyone already respects, it would be written off as the lightweight trifle that it really is. »»
