Body Blows: De La Hoya/Mayorga, The Latin Snake, and a Referee Chokeslams Oscar.

Columns, News, Results

Last week was perhaps the busiest week I’ve ever had in my life. Working Churchill Downs during Derby week would probably have been enough to gain that claim. But like a moron, I decided to “grow up” and buy a house. The day after the busiest work day in my life, I moved into my house. With all that going on, I could Noel on you guys and not show up but I’m just not like that.

De La Hoya vs. Mayorga

Before this fight, I couldn’t believe De La Hoya was going off at -260 for his Vegas odds. Oscar De La Hoya is a boxer/businessman. This fight was made for Oscar to win. Mayorga provided the highest payday for De La Hoya while yielding the lowest risk. This all came true last Saturday night.

Oscar dominated the fight from round one. Mayorga was put on his back in the opening minute of the fight and things never got any better for El Matador. De La Hoya dominated every round until the sixth round, when referee Jay Nady stopped the fight. De La Hoya connected on a flurry of headshots and Mayorga wasn’t doing anything to stop him. De La Hoya was so dominant in the fight that Jay Nady was the only person to get any offense on Oscar, delivering the devastating chokeslam pictured below:

What’s Next For Oscar?

The buzz going around for the last month is that Oscar De La Hoya’s next opponent will be Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mayweather is in his prime but has never fought someone like De La Hoya before. De La Hoya might be one of the smartest boxers alive in terms of his fight strategies. The ironic twist in this matchup is the man that trains De La Hoya and helps with those strategies is Floyd Mayweather Sr. The father-son relationship between the Mayweathers has always been rocky, but the father fully supports his son. Senior was shown cheering on his son during his destruction of Zab Judah. Oscar claims he will not fight without Floyd Classic in his corner but Floyd Classic doesn’t know if he can train someone to fight his son. If this fight is made, it’s likely to be one of the highest grossing fights in boxing history. De La Hoya would love to be a part of that, and I just can’t see him fighting anyone else. However, with his growing career as a promoter, retirement isn’t out of the question for the 33-year-old fighter.

The Latin Snake Returns

Sergi Mora, the winner of NBC’s boxing/reality show The Contender, was in action last week. Mora faced Archak TerMeliksetian in a middleweight bout that was broadcasted on ESPN. Mora was knocked down in the second round but wasn’t hurt and survived the round. During the first season of The Contender, Mora claimed he would quit boxing if he was ever knocked out. It’s a good thing for him it was only a flash knockdown. Not only did Mora get up, but he used his superior quickness to pummel TerMeliksetian. The fight was stopped controversially in the seventh round. Mora was slugging away on TerMeliksetian in the corner. The referee twice asked Archak to show him something. When Archak didn’t throw any punches, the ref haulted the bout. The problems with the stoppage are that Archak wasn’t really hurt and it’s hard to get punches off when your opponent consistently wails on your face. Archak’s defense was good enough for him to weather Mora’s storm and come back with a flurry of his own but the referee never gave him that chance. Regardless, Mora gained only the fourth KO if his career and improved his record to 18-0.

Not only do I not have the time to make up fake news stories, I don’t have time to plug anyone because I haven’t had the time to read anything. Ricky Hatton fights next week and I ought to be back to regular format by then. If you don’t like the regular format, email me at buddhabean316@yahoo.com and tell me why.
