Body Blows: Gonzalez/Montiel, Stockton’s Shorts, June Fights, and Mariah Carey.

Columns, News, Results

The bantamweights were in action last weekend as Jhonny Gonzalez put his WBO title on the line against Fernando Montiel. Gonzalez came into the fight with a record of 33-4 and was also on an 18-match winning streak. Montiel had a record of 32-1-1 and was making his first attempt at a bantamweight title. It’s difficult to get excited about 117-pounders fighting each other but since both men hail from Mexico, an action fight is always a possibility. Unfortunately, the possibility does not always translate into a certainty.

Gonzalez won a split decision but it should have been unanimous. Montiel should have lost the fight the moment he put on those John Stockton booty shorts.

The fight began with no indication that sucktitude will follow. The two fighters blasted combinations upon each other in the opening rounds. However, Mexican fighters produce Mexican fans and they want action. Montiel especially seemed to lose steam early and was content to only throw punches in the final ten seconds of every round. The fans were not going to be tricked by Daisy Duke and booed the majority of the fight. Two judges scored the bout 118-111 and 116-112 in favor of Gonzalez while the third judge scored it 115-113 for Montiel. Hopefully I won’t ever have to see Montiel and his upper thigh ever again.

June Fight Schedule

June 3rd – Coralles/Castillo III – The first fight was the 2005 Fight of the Year and this rubber match should blowoff the feud for good. Catch the action on Showtime.

June 3rd – Valuev/Beck – There is no national television for this heavyweight bout showcasing the 7-foot 300lb Russian but it is an important fight nonetheless.

June 10th – Hopkins/Tarver – Two future Hall of Famers squaring off in what will be Bernard Hopkins’ last fight. The fight is on PPV but not worth your money.

June 10th – Cotto/Malignaggi – Cotto defends his Light Welterweight title against the trash-talking Malignaggi. This is also on PPV but will be less money than the Tarver/Hopkins card and more fun to watch.

June 17th – Taylor/Wright – The two best middleweights in boxing meet on HBO to crown an undisputed champion.

June 24th – Julio/Quintana & Brock/Ibragimov – Julio is a future welterweight star and Brock is a future heavyweight star. Watch both fight on HBO and jump on the bandwagon before it gets too full.

Jockscraps – The Stories They Won’t Tell

Mariah Carey Overcomes Diarrhea To Deliver National Anthem

Not too long ago it appeared Mariah Carey was losing her touch with the American record-buying public. There were rumors that the pop songstress had endured a complete mental meltdown following the disastrous failure of her universally panned film Glitter. Pitiful album sales of the movie’s soundtrack only pushed her further over the edge. Or so it seemed. Before last night she was all but forgotten about except in the pages of People magazine, where every now and then pictures of the diva would pop up. But this was before last night, and now it seems she has made it known that Mariah Carey isn’t letting the world forget about her just yet.

Last night Carey mesmerized a crowd of people in attendance for a game between the Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies with her version of the Star Spangled Banner. When she hit the last note everyone in the stadium stood to their feet and gave her a standing ovation that lasted almost three minutes. A tearful Carey thanked the crowd before returning to her dressing room. Most remarkable is not the fact that her voice sounded stronger than it ever had, but that she temporarily abandoned her notorious “diva” behavior and actually took one for the team.

“You guys have no idea what it was like out there tonight,” Carey told reporters. “I’ve been as sick as a dog for the past few hours.” When asked to explain herself, Carey offered the following information:

“I’ve had the shits something terrible,” she said. “I’ve been a leaky faucet all day. I’ve taken every kind of medicine possible for it, but nothing seems to be working. It is by far the most crippling case of diarrhea I’ve ever come across. I lose a little bit with every step I take. You can only imagine what it was like straining to hit those high notes out there tonight. It was terrible. I’m talking massive doo-doo tracks.”

Despite her illness, Carey seems to have turned over a new page in her musical career. Her face lit up at the prospect of a successful return to fame.

“People have been down on me for a long time now. I just wanted to show them tonight that I’m not crazy in any sense of the word. I also hope that after tonight they will realize that I haven’t lost my voice at all. In fact, I think I’m a better singer now than I was five years ago. All of this has made me a stronger woman. There’s no way I would have gone out there five years ago and sang in front of all those people while I was sick with diarrhea. But, you know what? This is the new Mariah. The better Mariah. The Mariah that ain’t gonna let the doodie-shits get her down.”
