5oz of Fury: Sanchez vs. Koscheck, Couture vs. Ali, and More

Columns, News

I find it fascinating when people will say that “fighter x” can’t finish a fight. If you have your hand raiseD and are declared the winner, didn’t you finish the fight? Whether it’s a tap out in the first round or a split decision, isn’t a win still a win?

JOSH KOSCHECK VS. DIEGO SANCHEZ…WTF? LOL!
There was an interview with Josh Koscheck on MMAFighting.com where he talked about his upcoming April 7th fight against Diego Sanchez…a cat that he doesn’t seem to like all that much. Here’s the funny thing though…apparently the feud has spilled over onto MySpace. Someone proclaiming to be Diego Sanchez posted this on Koscheck’s page:

“HAPPY VALENTINES DAY HUMAN BLANKET, I HOPE YOU PACK SOME BALLS IN YOUR SUIT CASE WHEN YOU COME TO H TOWN, PLEASE DONT TRY TO DRY HUMP ME LIKE ALL YOUR OTHER BORING ASS FIGHTS. IM READY RIGHT NOW!!!! I ASKED DANA FOR YOU!! P.S. YOU AINT GOT HANDS” – Diego Sanchez

The reporter asked Kos what he thought, and here was his rebuttal:

I thought it was funny that he would go that low to post something on my MySpace. I have a friend that runs it for me and I don’t even go on there and check the messages. I heard it through the grapevine. It’s pretty funny and that shit doesn’t bother me. I don’t get on the forums or read the interviews. I’m just focused on my training and worrying about myself. I don’t care what Diego is doing or posting on MySpace. He is obviously nervous about the fight or he wouldn’t go on there and do that.

Children, can’t we all just get along? Besides the GSP/Serra fight (516 Holla back), the Sanchez/Kos fight is one I’m really looking forward to. I’m pulling for Sanchez, not because I favor one guy over the other, but because I think having Sanchez going into a title shot against GSP undefeated would make for a great fight down the road.

RANDY COUTURE VS. MUHAMMAD ALI
There’s a great article on Randy Couture’s title victory in the LA Times. You need to register to read it, but just throw them a fake e-mail address and they’ll be none the wiser. The article takes us through the atmosphere in the arena, to what it means to MMA, to what it means to fans, and it even compared Randy to other “elder” champions like Muhammad Ali and Jack Nicklaus.

I’ll be honest; I’m still new to the MMA hustle. I was one of the cats who got hooked with Ultimate Fighter 3, and that was after Randy Couture had already retired. I don’t have a sense of the history of MMA that I might with other sports. All that aside, even as a relative newcomer, I still felt the emotion and the sense that this was something special. It makes you wonder if one day, if MMA takes off the way we all think it will, we’ll look back on the fight the same way boxing aficionados look at Muhammad Ali vs. George Forman. Randy Couture is something special.

It’s just a shame that Cro Cop is going to murderize him come summer time.

THE CAST OF ULTIMATE FIGHTER 5
To go along with my brother-in-arms Kevin Wong’s look at the cast members, we now have this. A friend e-mailed it to me. No idea where he got it…

IFL BATTLEGROUND…I NEED YOUR HELP
The International Fight League debuts on MyNetwork TV tomorrow night. I pray it’s better than the countdown special they showed last week. Holy overhype! All they did was repeat the same catch phrase in the same loud DEEP, I’M TALKING LIKE THIS SO THAT YOU KNOW THIS IS REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT voice. And it moved so fast, they never took any time to profile any of the fighters. It was a lot of, “THIS IS SO AND SO! HE’S REALLY COOL! WATCH HIM KICK THIS GUY IN THE HEAD! REPEAT CATCH PHRASE #1!”

So here’s where I need your help. I’m going to be reviewing Battleground for the time being. The rub is that though I’m familiar with some of the coaches, I don’t know all that much about the IFL. Do you? Have you seen it before? Who are some of the guys I should be looking out for or paying attention to?
