Forest Whitaker is going to star in The Great Debaters teaming him up with Denzel Washington who will also star in the film and direct. The film begins shooting next month in Louisiana. The Weinstein Co. will be releasing the film that is to be produced by Oprah Winfrey’s company Harpo Films.
Washington will play a volatile coach in the thirties that leads a group of students from a small East Texas college on a debate team. He takes the small squad to the championship and up against the elite team from Harvard University.
Whitaker is going to play the father of one of the students on the team. His position will be trying to keep his son’s loyalty from veering from him and all to his coach.
The Great Debaters‘ script was written by Robert Eisele and is inspired by a true story.
