Notes on Brock Lesnar’s UFC Debut

News

Bryan Alvarez has written a great column about this Saturday’s match-up pitting former WWE Champion Brock Lesnar vs. former UFC Champion Frank Mir. An excerpt:

As far as Lesnar is concerned, there is great bitterness towards him from both MMA and pro-wrestling fans. On the MMA side, he’s a pro-wrestler who is getting a sweet deal and a major debut in UFC despite being largely unproven with only one prior professional fight, plus he knows the game and says the things that are designed to piss those fans off. On the wrestling side, he was a guy that got brought up early, pushed huge right out of the gate, given a good run as a top star and the WWE Title, and then supposedly SOLD OUT by walking away from the sport to try his hand at football. Of course, those accusing him of selling out clearly don’t understand what the term actually means, particularly given the fact that he left a very high paying wrestling gig to give his football dreams a shot for a fraction of that money. Nobody sold out, nobody turned their back on the fans; the pro-wrestling lifestyle was not for Brock Lesnar, so he chose to walk away.
