Kevin Iole at Yahoo Sports estimates that the De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao boxing superfight from last weekend drew approximately 1.5 million pay per buys.
As Iole mentions, if this number holds up (and all indications are that it likely will), it’s a true testament to the drawing power of De La Hoya that he’s able to easily defeat even the UFC’s largest numbers when the talk in mainstream radio and sports focuses on the death of boxing and the rise of mixed martial arts.
The hope in the boxing community is that Pacquiao’s big win over the biggest draw in the entire sport will turn him into a legitimate PPV draw as well, and he’ll have a chance to test that theory in 2009.
