Lara Croft leaping back onto the Big Screen

Disc Announcements, News

That’s right, every video game dorks favorite large breasted female action hero is going to have herself a third live action film if all goes well.

Lara Croft

Warner Bros. and producer Dan Lin are in early development on a reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise.

Tomb Raider, published in 1996 by London-based video game company Eidos, was a wildly popular game that followed the daredevil archaeologist Lara Croft on a series of global missions.

Paramount previously made two movies based on the game, but the rights have since reverted to Eidos. When Time Warner upped its stake to 19.92% in Eidos in December, films rights to the property were included as part of the deal.

Lin will produce the project via his Lin Pictures banner while Stephen Gilchrist will co-produce. Lin is currently working on the upcoming Warner Bros. Guy Ritchie directed update of Sherlock Holmes as well as the adventure film Jonny Quest.

The new project is expected to revamp the character and her mission and bear little resemblance to the original films. It will reimagine the origins of the character, her love interest and the main villain.

The project is still in very early stages. There has been no hints as to who might fill the big bra.. er.. shoes of Angelina Jolie who played the titular (pun intended) character in the first two films. It is likely casting will only happen after a writer and director are attached.

The first film, which came out in 2001, grossed an impressive $275 million worldwide, while the 2003 follow-up earned a mere $157 million. Will a third film continue this downward trend or will a revamp give the franchise the boost it needs for further sequels? Only proper casting and time will tell.
