WWE Interview Roundup: Cena Talks Steroids, Regal Talks Punk, and Striker Talks Marvel Comics

News

Interviews with Cena, Regal, and Striker cover a lot of ground, from A-Rod to CM Punk to Ant Man.

The Seattle Post Intelligencer’s Jim Moore has an interview with John Cena, where the former World Champ talks about his rags to riches rise to fame, his home life, his golf game, and his thoughts on steroids in sports:

What happened with Alex Rodriguez and the steroids revelations sickened him. He thinks if everyone really wants to get serious about cleaning up the game, “they should send the guys to jail.”

“I’m not only a guy who will say I’m clean, but I’ll beat my chest to the world that I’m clean,” he said. “I have very, very strong opinions on that.”

He also talks about his movie career:

“That’s a giant void in cinema,” Cena said. “Everywhere I go, the question is always: ‘Who’s the next guy?’ I think I’m damn near the closest thing to come around the pike.”

William Regal was interviewed by Patrick Lennon at the UK’s Daily Star. Regal talks about a heart scare he had shortly after winning the IC Title on the UK Tour:

He said: “I had a bit of a strange episode after the tour – I thought it was a touch of flu, but it turned out to be trouble from years ago with my heart.

He also talks about how he first heard about current rival Punk, and puts him over:

“It was from Eddie Guerrero that I first heard about Punk – when he went away and worked some independents he came across him.

“I’ve been fan of Punk for a long time now. I’d heard about him from his work with ROH.

“What I like about him is he learns and is a real student of the game, despite that dirty, scruffy exterior badly in need of soap.”

Finally, Matt Striker has a fun interview at Marvel.com, where he talked about a comic book reference he made on ECW (that I somehow missed):

“Right when I tagged Katie Lea with the ‘Scarlet Witch’ descriptor it was a natural segue for me to refer to her brooding brother as Quicksilver,” smiles Striker. “I’m reading AVENGERS/JLA [right now] so those characters are present in my mind. I do, at times, plan certain things and if they’re there, I try to make them as organic as possible.”

Then he really geeks out, casting an Avengers movie with WWE Talent, talking about his favorite characters, and telling the story of how he got in to comics again, which is pretty great:

“Actually I returned to [comics] after I confiscated a ‘Heroes Reborn’ issue from a kid in one of my classes when I was a teacher,” he recalls. “I read it and gave it back to him the next day, which he thought was great. We all know how frustrating it is to either lose a comic you know you had or be missing something in a series.”

He evens outs CM Punk as a fan of Marvel’s “Distinguished Competition.” So, there’s a lot there if you’re a fan of comics and WWE.
