UFC Ultimate Knockouts 6 – DVD Review

Features

“It is awwwlllll over!!”

Announcer Mike Goldberg has become infamous for that statement when a fight has a decisive finish. In this DVD, you get to hear that some 30-odd times as Goldberg hosts yet another hour (or so) of knockouts and technical knockouts from 2006 to 2008. Because this is a knockout show, we don’t get to see the full matches and the events leading up to the knockout, so the story gets lost somewhat. But if you’re watching this disc, you don’t want the story – you want the finish, and by golly, you get finishes. And since this is basically a highlight reel DVD, I don’t feel like I’ll be spoiling any of the finishes by talking about them. You probably know the finishes regardless.

Included in this DVD are the finishes to several title fights, including Rich Franklin/Anderson Silva I and Matt Hughes/GSP II. I should note that in the Hughes/GSP fight that vaseline was clearly a factor in Hughes getting his head kicked into next week. And speaking of which, we do get our share of head kick finishes. We also get the usual “one punch” finishes and KOs through some relentless ground and pound. Some of the more memorable knockouts in recent memory are here, including Sell vs. Smith, Evans vs. Salmon and . Salmon, by the way, has gone on to do some blogging on and off (a la pro baller Paul Shirley) for MMA Junkie and gives you some great insights into the world of the regional circuits of MMA. But I digress. You also get some knockouts that you may not have seen before, such as James “One Punch” Irvin’s KO of Rampage Jackson protege Hector Ramirez.

As I mentioned before, you don’t get to see full matches on this disc (unless they were 30 second KOs that is) so to be honest, the KOs get boring after a while. Which, I suppose, is why they mix in those head kick KOs but to be honest, I’d love to have seen some of the rarer knockouts like Antoni Hardonk’s KO of Sherman Pendergast (which consisted of continual kicks to the thigh until he couldn’t stand anymore) or the Gray Maynard/Rob Emerson no contest (Gray more or less DDT’ed himself. Yeah, it apparently works.).

The UFC took footage from their broadcasts and as such their matches are presented in 16:9 format. Sports always looks great in 16:9, and it’s no exception here. Sound is fine, but for the most part you’re hearing Goldberg and Joe Rogan/Randy Couture talk so it’s nothing special here.

Not a one. I guess they could’ve added some bonus knockouts, but you’ll probably be burned out from 75 minutes of them.

In all honesty, I would give this one a look as a rental, but as far as buying the thing, I’d take a pass unless you’re looking to have something to pop into your DVD player as a conversation piece/distraction.
