News

The following news items were posted on the August 13, 2009 ROH Newswire:

Ring of Honor returns to The Arena in South Philadelphia this weekend – August 14th and 15th - for two nights of TV Tapings for ROH on HDNet.  Already announced for Friday is KENTA, Bryan Danielson, & Roderick Strong vs. The American Wolves & Chris Hero in a Six Man Tag Team Match; Kevin Steen & El Generico vs. Jay & Mark Briscoe in a Tag Team Contender’s Match; Brent Albright vs. Claudio Castagnoli in a Steel Cage Match; and Jimmy Rave vs. The Necro Butcher.  Also, Austin Aries will defend the ROH World Title.

Saturday’s show is certainly not to be outdone.  For the first time ever, Chris Hero and KENTA will face off one-on-one.  In another first time occurrence, Saturday’s show will feature the Tag Team Honor Rumble, with the winning team getting a future Tag Title shot.  Participants include The American Wolves, The Dark City Fight Club, Joey Ryan & Jimmy Rave of The Embassy, The Young Bucks, Kevin Steen & El Generico, Kenny King & Rhett Titus, Brent Albright & Erick Stevens, and The Briscoe Brothers.   Also scheduled to face off in a Special Challenge Match are Roderick Strong and D-Lo Brown.  Other talent scheduled to appear this weekend includes Tyler Black, Nigel McGuinness, Colt Cabana, Sonjay Dutt, Bison Smith, Delirious, and Eddie Kingston.

Don’t forget:  ROH on HDNet no longer airs on Saturdays.  From now on, ROH will air on Mondays at 8 PM ET, with the replay coming at 11 PM ET, starting this Monday night, August 17th.  ROH has booked quite the main event for its prime time debut, as former World Champion Nigel McGuinness squares off against Tyler Black.  McGuiness has been targeting Black in his promos over the last few weeks, so we can safely say Black will be eager to get his hands on McGuiness (SHAMELESS PLUG:  The August 17th show will also mark the debut of my “Ten Thoughts on ROH” column – be sure to look for that the following morning!).

Petey Williams has selected his partner to face ROH World Champion Austin Aries and Rhett Titus on in Dayton.  So on September 18th, the master of the Canadian Destroyer will pairing up with none other than Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana!  Aries was stunned by the news, commenting, “I was sure Williams would have picked Tyler Black.  But no sweat, it didn’t matter who he picked, because the equation leads to the same solution: A-Double, the MV3, hand held high in victory.”  Petey has also petitioned ROH officials for a one-on-one match against Aries, and awaits decision from ROH officials on that matter.

But weep not for Tyler Black.  Just because Petey Williams did not choose him as his partner doesn’t mean that he won’t have his hands full come September 18th.  To the contrary, Black will face the man considered by many as most athletically gifted wrestler to ever compete in Ring of Honor – Claudio Castagnoli.

The next night, September 19th, ROH comes to Chicago, in what promises to be a showcase of wrestling’s past, present and future.  In June, when ROH was in Detroit, the House of Truth – Christin Able and Josh Raymond – debuted in impressive fashion.  This time, however, they face a tough test in the form of two of ROH’s toughest and more seasoned grapplers, Erick Stevens and Brent Albright.  Also, in an event that wrestling purists have to be awaiting with great anticipation, Bret “The Hitman” Hart will be making an appearance in Chi-Town! Tickets are now on sale now at www.rohwrestling.com.

On September 24th in Boston, Kevin Steen gets a shot at payback that’s been a long time coming.  At “Never Say Die,” Steen and Davey Richards went took each other to hell, in a battle that included tables, ladders, blood, sweat, and pain.  However, the thing that has stuck with Steen the most about that match, more than any scars or bruises, has been the memory of Eddie Edwards, in true American Wolves fashion, blindsiding him in the aisle.  Edwards will now have to answer for his actions, because in Boston, it will be Kevin Steen vs. Eddie Edwards, in an “Anything Goes” match.

Due to a scheduling issue, the Ring of Honor event originally scheduled for the Inman Center in Edison, NJ on Saturday, November 28th will now take place on November 7th.  All tickets purchased for the event on 11/28 will be honored on 11/7.   The Edison event will now take place as part of a triple header of action as ROH will be taping two nights of TV on 11/5 and 11/6 in Philadelphia.
