MLB News: Boston Red Sox Catcher Victor Martinez Out With Broken Thumb

News

The Sox are suffering a rash of injuries right now, but still playing some of their best baseball of the season.

Martinez took two foul balls off his thumb Sunday in the Red Sox game against the San Fransisco Giants, the first from Pablo Sandoval and the second from Andres Torres.

Martinez tried to play with the injury but his thumb swelled up to the point where he couldn’t continue after the 4th inning when Jason Varitek replaced him behind the plate.

The Red Sox are hopeful Martinez doesn’t have to go on the DL, but haven’t decided yet. The Red Sox suffered injuries to second baseman Dustin Pedroia and starting pitcher Clay Buchholtz in the series against the Giants.
