Strikeforce Wants To Host Heavyweight Grand Prix, Fedor talks hit problems

News

As reported by Brazillian webste Tatame Strikeforce is planning to put together a eight-man tournament to determine who is the best heavyweight in the promotion. Now one would think that was what their heavyweight championship was for but c’est la vie. The desired field includes said heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem and the longtime number one contender Fabricio Werdum plus Fedor Emelianenko, Josh Barnett, Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva, Brett Rogers, Andrei Arlovski and Sergei Kharitonov. The plan would be for the three stages to be spread over a nine month period with the final possibly being the headliner of the promotion’s first ever pay per view.

It is reported that Strikeforce hoped that the tournament would have kicked off with a match pitting Fedor Emelianenko against Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva on their forthcoming January 29th event. However MMA Fighting is reporting that Strikeforce has confirmed that the fight will not take place as planned due to the organization still having yet to reach terms with Fedor. As Strikeforce’s broadcast partner Showtime has found with the Super Six, its unlikely that’ll be the only problem when it comes to putting together such an ambitious tournament
