Last year it was reported that Noomi Rapace and Jeremy Renner were circling a project that would find Hansel and Gretel, once the victims of witchcraft, as grown bounty hunters who specialize in killing witches. While Jeremy Renner now seems to be a lock for the project, the role of Gretel has gone to Gemma Arterton.
Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola will direct the dark action comedy. Adam McKay and Will Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez company will produce. The film currently has a production start date of March 7 in Berlin — which would put the project squarely between Renner’s work on Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol and The Avengers.
The Hollywood Reporter suggests that the film is being fast-tracked into production in order to beat Fox’s Timur Bekmambetov-directed adaptation of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, a big screen version of the popular Seth Grahame-Smith novel about America’s favorite vampire-killing president.
